Inventor 8 balloon problems

I found that in 8 if I balloon an assembly, selecting first level
components. When I balloon a subassembly within the main assembly the
balloon number will not show. We use a custom property balloon, and the top
level part has an item number assigned to it. The balloon will not show the
item number, if I assign the item number to a part in the assembly and
balloon that part the item number will show. Inventor is treating my
sub-assemblies as "only parts" but I selected "first level components". Is
this a bug, or am I missing something.

Matt

This has been so... at least in IV7 it was.

What does your parts list in the drawing show. Can you expand the one sub?
Do the components of the sub show up under the top level? I have had the
same problem if I have renamed a sub in DA.

Yes it shows in the parts list, but not in the balloon

Can you expand the sub in the parts list?

Do the sub's parts show up under the top level? No 8.1 etc?

I've seen this behavior before. I think an ipn has always been parked between the idw and iam in those cases. Things just get out of sink and act goofy. Some subs will be fine and others will act this way. I just had to resort to using a sketched symbol for the balloon.

I'm seeing the same behavior in 7 & 8.

I have a sketch symbol that has a property field in it that references a
model custom property field. When I insert the sketch symbol as a callout
it extracts the lowest level custom property field of the selected.... not a
problem if it is an ipt, but if selected is an iam and its the iam itself
that you want to balloon then you can't extract its custom property field.

Is this what you are describing?

Dave

Right, it is not getting the property from the iam, instead it gets the
property from the part that the leader is touching (and that part doesn't
have the custom field)

So we agree on the behavior, yet I see it in 7 as well and you don't?
