Inventor 2012 Mate Contraint using new (select other) pull-down feature.

I like the new pull-down/select other concept, but I may have found a bug.  When I open the mate constraint dialog box, I choose (face  #1) and then choose a face on another component (face #2) using the new feature, the constraint preview shows what I want to have happen , but the "apply" button stays greyed out.  I then click cancel and the part goes back to where it was. (Operation Cancelled.)  The mate constraint will work if I rotate around and choose face #2 without the select other feature.  Is anybody else experiencing this?

Thanks,

Chris

Not sure if  it's a bug, but I find it balky as well. A nice idea, but it had me the other day looking to see if I could find a setting to turn it back to "Classic" selection.

I did notice, however, that if I have the "select item first" box checked.  The constraint apply will work.  But, in most cases, this is adding unnecessary mouse clicks.

I liked select other the way it was.

Chris,

Thanks for reporting this issue! This is a known issue on R2012. It is being investigated. Hopefully, it will be resolved soon.

Thanks!

Yes, this is affecting me too - very irritating.

I also like the new method in principle, but I don't like how in the past it would cycle through for example Face1, Face2, then hole edge, axis etc in a sort of order, but now tends to go Face1, Hole Edge, Axis, Face2 in random.

To give an example, I mostly use Sheet Metal components and use iFeatures to place PEM style parts.  In the past I could always look at the front face where sketch points are placed and when it asked for the back face could just hi-light the front face, wait for the select other box and one mouse wheel turn later and I've selected the rear face.  Now, I seem to have to scroll through EVERYTHING for ages before the correct face is selected - a real step backwards in that regard for how I drive Inventor.

I was spending some time at home trying different techniques and I did find that if you change your selection process, so that the first part you pick is with the scroll to get at the something other than the front face it works fine.

Select front face/constraint feature on first item, then select second item using the new select face tool, unable to complete constraint

Select desired face on the first item using the new select tool, then select the second part face, you are able to complete the constraint.

I would call this a bug.

I had tried checking the select item first box when selecting the 2nd face and the constraint will complete, but this has added mouse clicks, thus defeating the purpose of the new enhancement.  Hopefully we'll see a hotfix ... ahem .... soon.

it was crap in the sketch environment though. you could cycle through and select something but then you couldn't actually do anything with it. I havent played with this one yet so i'm not sure if that has changed

Been using Inventor 2012 a good few weeks now and the new select other method is the biggest step back ever!  I hate it.

Say for example you need to measure the distance btween one hole centre to another, in the past you'd hover over a hole edge, the select other icon would appear and youd scroll on step on the mouse wheel and the centre point would be selected.

Now, for some reason it scrolls through in odd numbers, i.e. you get a list of features such as:

1. Arc Radius

2. Centre Point

3. Edge

4. Arc Radius

5. Centre Point (different one)

and so on.

I want number 2 95% of the time, but when I scroll with the mouse wheel it goes 1, 3, 5, 7 etc!!!!

PLEASE add an option to the old method of select other - this is rubbish.

It's been listed as a fix in waiting. I keep checking the Autodesk website on a regular basis, hoping the fix has been posted.

I just find it balky.

Now we just need to see if SP1 will actually make it out in 1 months time.

The problem is fixed in SP1 for Inventor 2012, which should be available in about one month time.
