Go to Tools>Application Options here.

TEMPLATES.JPG

It draws the correct tempalte from this folder depending on what you are importing whether it is a drawing part or assembly.

There are dozens of templates to choose from .ipt or .asm.  Even now in 2014, there are sub folders now.

Can you explain the problem?

Inventor should use the Default in or mm iam and/or ipt files depending on the detected units of the import or your override.

Attach example file here if it will help illustrate the reason for this question about templates.

We have our set of templates, which I set to their location in the options.  They include custom properties which show up in the BOM of the drawings.  These custom properties show when I open an new assembly with the template, but not when I import.  Which to me tells me it is using a different template.

Import uses the Default templates. ex. (Standard (mm).*)
You will have to make any changes you want to them.

Hi albmopar,

If you go to the location that Cadmanto pointed out, and look for a file named: Standard.ipt, this is the file that Inventor will use when translating files from other formats.

If you do not have a file named Standard.ipt in that folder, then Inventor will use an internal, hard coded template file. So in these cases it's often best to copy your template and rename it Standard.ipt.

Note too that if you have your template location set in your *ipj file, then that setting will override the templates location set in the Application Options setting that Cadmanto pointed out.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

You have brought up a very interesting point with this thread.

I have since created an idea speaking to this issue.  I beleive based on this thread there should be an option that allows you to select which template is to be used when importing.
