IAM Export to DWG File Size Extremely Large

What is the best way to reduce the file size of an Inventor IAM 3D Model when exporting to a DWG format?  My client only needs a couple of 2D views in order to take measurements in AutoCAD.

Welcome to the forum.

Try saving the .iam out as an igs file first.  Open up the iges file in the Inventor session then save that out as

a dwg.  I know the iges file will be smaller in size which should funnel down to the dwg.

  • Create a new Inventor drawing (IDW or DWG doesn't matter).
  • Create the 2D views your client needs.
  • Export Inventor drawing to an AutoCAD drawing (select version if that matters).

This way your file is as flat as a pancake and consuming the least amount of file size. Smiley Wink

Not an answer for the OP's requirement, but for future reference,

I have found that Fasteners can make the DWG file incredibly heavy.

Create a LOD and suppress the fasteners from the model before exporting the 3d model.

This cuts the file size down tremendously.
