How to save an assembly without the parts "inside"?

I have a box. From the outside there are parts attached to the box by a thread, i.e they are both outside and inside the box. I would like to export the assembly in a way I will get a solid part of the box that I can send to my customer to include in his construction, but I don't want to give away my construction inside the box.

Is this possible? I have tried to make a new part and derive the assembly once and twice, but no luck. I can still zoom inside the box and se the parts and easily take measurements. I don't want the customer to copy my construction... 😉

derive the assy into a new part - turn off (grey)
the components inside the box which you don't want visible (as pic)

Hi Sam,

Yes, that works, but the components are both outside and inside the box... and if I grey them out - they will be invisible outside the box too... so it won't solve my problem.

sorry, thought you just wanted to remove the
internal parts.

To hide everything within the exterior walls of the
box:

2009 (or earlier) - could create a new part
which matches the internal walls of the box.  Derive the assy with that in
place and either subtract it (red minus logo) to create an empty space (cutting
away anything entering the box), or add it to provide a fully filled
box.

with 2010 would shrinkwrap just provide the
exterior shape and create a solid mass inside the box?  (not installed 2010
yet so can't remember).

hope that helps.

What version of Inventor do you have?

if 2009 or 2010 you definately want the shrinkwrap functionality...

I use Inventor (professional) 2009 SP1.

My latest try that worked, was to extrude (cut) everything inside the box away (a sketch in the derived part), something similar to that someone suggested above with a new part with the inner measurements of the box. I then derived the parts once again, before saving it as a STEP.

This ought to be a feature in coming versions of Inventor! I can't be the only one in the whole world with the same problem - sharing a design without giving everything away.
