How do I loft this?

I tried a sweep but it was not what I wanted. I need to loft from the lower
sketch to the upper sketch using the 3d spiral line as a path or rail.
Once I select a sketch I'm unable to select anything else. I haven't done
much lofting so I must be doing something wrong.
Any help will be appreciated, Thanks

Paul,
Can you upload the zip file from the HTTP site:-

http://discussion.autodesk.com/forum.jspa?forumID=78

Zips seem to be getting corrupted when uploaded through the news side of
things.

Inventor is not yet supporting loft via centerline rail. Currently, the rail
has to intersect each of the sections.
Thanks!

I am trying to figure out what you are trying to do.
Is this anywhere close? Or were you only concerned with the two larger circles at either end of the path?

Yes this is exactly what I am trying to do. How did you do the outside rods
without rails. and it looks like the center pipe only has a 3d line, center
line. I had to create rails for each loft. I see the derived part but the
link was broken so I can't figure out what you did. Could I have created a
big block and cut all 5 profiles using the one center line?

OK, first I wanted to verify what you were trying to do.
A loft like this must have a rail that intersects the section profile. The process I used beyond that is rather complicated, but I created a master loft that I then deleted most of the faces and then used what was left to create 3D sketch rails with the include geometry command. If you look closely you will see the pipe is somewhat flattened. I would need at least one more rail per loft and maybe more created the same way the single rails were created but in different quadrants of the circles.
I suspect there are easier alternatives (probably with sweeps but I don't have all the information on the design intent you have). I would try several different alternatives and then pick the best. If I get time tomorrow I will try to post an example. But I am reluctant to present an example that I strongly suspect might not be the most elegant. Maybe some others have some ideas.

JD, I am really impressed by your creativity with surfaces.

I try to solve it in another way.

Paul, if the path in the 3D-sketch is critical,
this coil feature is no option.
If it is not, this is another solution.

BTW it is an IV10 file, if you prefer IV9, let me know.

Thank you very much . This is a method I started with.but had problems. This
will help a lot.
One question .... I noticed you had the center of mass in there a couple of
times. What are you doing with that?

Hi Paul,

Here is the R9 version.

Hi Paul,
Nothing in particular.
It's an add-in for IV 6-9, written by Patrick Stöbeleir.

It adds some custom properties like mass, volume and save time and date automatically.
You can find the properties in iProperties, Custum tab.
It adds a workfeature at the COG called Center of Mass too.

This is the link:

Regards,
Henjo
