Heard of Inventor?

First of all this post is not for a complaint or gripe session. If you need
to vent or complain start a different post, please. I am just curious. I
just got off the phone with a vendor that is supplying me with 3-D data.
They use a High-End competitors product, which he has used for 14 years (so
he is not totally ignorant of the industry). During our conversation
regarding our file format needs. He asked me if we were using SW. I
informed him that we used Inventor which prompted him to ask, "what is
that?" As I started to explain to him he said, "oh you use Autocad", to
which I began to explain the differences. Now to my question/curiosity,
How can a 3-D software user of 14+ years not know about Inventor? Nothing,
Nadda, Zilch? Please let me reiterate, THIS IS NOT A BASH, but for some
reason this struck a cord.

Keith,
I've heard this many times when speaking about MDT.
Not many poeple out there, be it managers or users, do a random look over
the fence. I found poeple here in this NG to be the only that are open in
mind and like to risk a look at other packages.

PS: IV6 users tend to need this

I have spent countless hours trying to convince Engineers, Designers and
Machinists that I WORK WITH that Inventor is not AutoCAD, Inventor is not an
add-on for AutoCAD, Inventor is not a new AutoCAD, Inventor isn't an AutoCAD
upgrade. I have to explain over and over again that AutoCAD and Inventor
can't share files associatively. There are only 2 Inventor users out of 8
designers here. So everything has to be saved back to AutoCAD - a tedious
process at best, not to mention having duplicate files of everything. I
feel your pain.

I am continually amazed that people who are versed in CAD (and even 3D CAD)
reply with similar responses when I mention Inventor. I could name on in
particular but it would definitely get me into hot water with the new
company

I could understand an individual not having ever heard of IV, but I've noticed
a similar lack of presence in job postings (monster.com, etc.) as well. Time
and a good product [can / will] change all that. For now I think we
constitute a minority 8~)

Thanks all.  This is about what I
figured.  I guess I was trying to... I do not know...Give a gentle slap on
the side of the head of Marketing.  Maybe a wake up call is a nicer way to
say it.   <G>

I know some guys who *had* heard of inventor, even bought a few copies to use in their design department. (They already used AutoCad to do most of their stuff.) None of their designers/engineers ever got around to using Inventor. I don't know why, maybe they didn't think it was worth the effort, maybe they do live under rocks. A thing I do know is, that they don't have a design department any more. They send some (most) of the work that used to get done there, here, where we do use Inventor. There may be no connection between the two, but....

Jeff,

That is interesting you mentioned the job market. I too have found LITTLE
need for IV users. I am banking that it will not always be that way, but
for know it is curious. I guess the positive way to look at it is that IV
users are SO valuable that companies that have knowledgeable user will not
let them go.
