Groove welds on piping o'lets

It would appear that it is not possible to make a groove weld between the underside of a pipe o'let (CC part) and its mating trunk pipe.  I can only make a fillet weld at best.  I've tried radial fill, directional fill, full face and vanilla.  No go, Captain.  Am I missing something?

Similar to the other welding post, I can't make the groove weld for the o'let follow a fill direction.  It only works with a radial fill.  I would prefer to have a proper groove weld and build a fillet weld from it.

If one substitutes an elbow in for the pipe, there is no ability to make a groove weld at all to the underside of the o'let, only a fillet weld.
