Fourm Recommendation

Not sure if this has been requested before or not...

I think its time to have this forum split up into software versions just like AutoCad is. Being new to Inventor there are a lot of discussions/replies happening on many different versions of Inventor. It is time consuming looking through all the postings or searches to see if a given problem has already been addressed. I would even go as far as breaking it down like sheet metal, routed system, and etc.

All in favor, say "I"....

Anyway that's my opinion.

Cheers everyone....

welcome to 5 years ago..

I'd like the ability for mods to sticky posts, I'd like to have a "reply with quote button", even your current inventor version posted under your name,etc...

I believe the reason why its not split is because not nearly as many people would go back into previous version sections to help others.

The splits are Vault, User Files and Customization. Most of the action is
here.

Yes, this horse was beat senseless a few years ago.

Basically, we're not inclined to break up based on versions as (unlike
AutoCAD), Inventor customers tend to upgrade more quickly than Inventor
users. If you posted an R10-specific question, you'd likely be waiting
quite awhile for an answer. Whereas there are still a lot of AutoCAD users
still on the 2000 series.

Besides, if your main motivation is to reduce time spent searching for an
already-addressed problem, it's much easier to do that in one search rather
than four or five.

If I was searching for an r10, r11, ..., specific answer I'd be up the creek.
If I remember correctly the forums were lumped together contrary to the wishes
voiced by most users outside the Autodesk support network.

Autodesk hosts the forum and does so with Autodesk's interest forefront. Period.

Like another subject that was beat to death a few years ago trying to "justify"
it borders on insult.

I'd recommend a newsreader... even Outlook Express offers the features you're referring to. Plus no
logging in step! The downside is that you can't edit you message, but that doesn't stop ME from
saying stupid stuff. ;-}

I saw a forum yesterday that allows you to post what version of Inventor your running... not much posted on it yet so I didn't bother registering yet.

So what we really need then, is a better search.

I've never really had a problem with the search tools available on Outlook
Express (thought I've got other issues with it). Yes, searching the
web-based interface leaves a lot to be desired.

The only way search on the web side seems to work for me is to explicitly add a + symbol in front of every search word. Not doing this gives me back results that only match the first word and ignore the others. Maybe it's just me.

I totally agree with Andrew. I don't want this forum broken up. What a
pain searches would be. Often there are issues that are the same between
versions. It is fine the way it is.

Just put the version in your signature or as part of your message subject
line.

Rob V said: "Just put the version in your signature or as part of your message subject

If indeed most people did that (an excellent suggestion), then the current searches of the single forum would not be as painful as it is currently is. As long as the participants in the forum reminded those forgetful or ignorant people, then I would be fine with one forum instead of split forums. However, as it stands with not all people putting their version in their signature, a single forum is NOT and would NOT be fine the way it (currently) is.

I am strongly for a single forum only if all or most people put their version in their signature. Otherwise, count me as an "Aye" for split forums.

I'm not against that, but I'm not sure what version would people specify when they are slowly implementing the new version while still using a prior version. Then there's the Series versus Pro thing again...

How often is the tag line longer than the reply? There is such a thing as overhead and a finite
amount of storage. On a related note, including all of the message you are replying to is just
wasteful. Putting versioning aside, who's 'bout other categories (sketching, parts, assemblies,
drawings, iFeatures...)?

Yes, my frugality is showing. ;-}
