Excel linked Decal

Is there anyway to link TEXT in an Excel spread sheet to show as a decal on an I-Part?

Nope.  You could put in several decals and
turn them on and off via the table however.

I made an iPart by suppressing Embossed text.

I'll post in Inv. CF

You can use an excel spreadsheet instead of a bitmap -Select excel as file type when inserting the picture in your sketch for the decal. Check LINK in the same dialog and you have a linked picture of the spreadsheet.

You must update it manually - select sketch, RMB the image, update.

I'm not sure how to control the content of this picture - i.e the number of cells to be shown. Someone else know?

When I first started trying this, I figured that would be a good way to go, but I was not able to control which "cells" in the Excel spreadsheet were displayed. I also considered changing the cell contents within Excel, but Inventor did not like me using multiple pages in excel. (I'm sure I was doing something wrong with that part of it.) I have also put a word document into the decal, but can't come up with a good way to change the text of a word document from the excel sheet of the Ipart. I think I will put it on the back burner for the time being and just handle it manually. Maybe there will be an easier way with R8.

You cannot achieve what you want because derived
parts do not support decals yet; since iParts are based on derived parts they
have also have the same limitation.

However, you can get a decal to change when you
change a particular parameter. We had a parameter called X, which was to
take values of 1, 2, 3, and so on. Then we added a VBA function called
DecalLabel that took a double value as an argument. This function was a big
"Select Case" function. For each value (1, 2, 3, ...) we would open the Excel
file and change the value in the A1 cell appropriately, and then save the Excel
file. In other words, we just wanted a "side effect" of this function rather
than its return value. To get this function to fire, we create another variable
Y and assign it the value DecalLabel( X ) * 1 in .

To change the label, edit the sketch, open the
parameter dialog and change X to whatever value you want, update the image (RMB
on the image), and update the part (toolbar update button). This is not
something convenient, but hopefully there are some useful ideas in this
technique.
