Dual Monitor Issue when disconnected

I use a dual monitor back in the office, but when I'm on the road, I only use one monitor, and Inventor's dialog boxes flash and then disappear (so far the "text" dialog box and the "new" dialog box). How can I fix this?

BTW Inventor Professional 2008 SP2

TIA
Todd

Are you using the same XP login/profile for the office as well as the road?

If the dialog is off the screen you could try to move it. Press ALT+SPACE to
activate the window-menu, M for move, then move with the arrows.

try to right click on the taskbar and pick cascade windows. .sometimes that works for us our our MAS90 program that does goofy stuff with windows like you have mentioned.

Hi Blair,

Yes I am using the same XP login/profile for the office as well as the road.

Hi Per Engberg,

Tried it and got the arrows but as soon as I clicked, they went away and I never did see my missing dialog box.

Hi bradz24,

Tried that and all the other windows cascaded nicely but my dialogs were still no-where to be found.

Okay - got it fixed for now... I hooked up a monitor, hit my new and text commands, and then dragged the dialog boxes over to my primary display and then closed them. The next time I started either of those two commands, they start back up where they were last closed.

Inventor seems to "remember" where the dialogs last displayed/closed and even though the laptop was told not to extend the desktop Inventor either doesn't honor this or it just means nothing to Inventor - my best guess is somewhere in the registry Inventor keeps track of an XY start point for the dialog?

Anyway thanks for all the help and if somebody knows for certain - please let me know...

Thanks again
Todd

If you have an Nvidia graphics card enable Nview.
In the Nview properties, under the Windows tab, there is an option for
Dialog box repositioning (See Pic).
Maybe these settings will help?

Since IV has user settings associated with each user login, I might suggest
a separate user account for on the road. It will take a bit of time to set
the "road" account up for other items such as e-mail (having it point to the
same account as your office login). All your IV project files can still be
used. A one time involvement in set-up will save you time down the road.

Todd,

You are correct, it stores the position and size of certain dialog boxes in
the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion12.0\System\Preferences\Dialog

Clearing these keys should reset the dialogs to their default position.

This is a known issue for Inventor with dual displays.

- Matt

For property windows you should clear the keys in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion[ver]\System\Preferences\PropertySheet\

I have the same issue. I try to move everything to the laptop display if I can remember if I know I will be using my laptop at home.

yes finding a display elsewhere to move the program works.

I found that right mouse clicking on the button on the start menu tool bar (bottom of the screen) and selecting restore works for the main program, but the pop up windows for open file, measuring etc are still on the phantom display.

This method was descibed earlier in this thread, but I thought I'd share the attached, as it explains it well. I forget where I got this image, but I keep it on hand for use internally as, this seems to come up from time to time around here. So, thanks to whomever I got this from originally.
