Does IV6 handle memory better than IV5.3?

I have a huge assy in Inventor 5.3 at the moment and it tends to eat up all
my Ram. (1.5 gig of it!) I now have a new workstation with 2 gig available
(Assy with 2500+ placed parts) and was wondering if IV6 would handle it
better. I won't risk going from one version to another if there's little to
gain. The Assy is built with lots of Iparts.

Thanks for any help,

Ronald

I'm afraid that IV6 maybe consumes even more RAM.
Before you go to upgrade, make backup of your files and do a extensive test
run. Be sure SP1&2 are applied.
It seldom does fine when upgrading in the middle of a project, unless you
can proof that your specific problems are really solved in the new release.
Got burned by this several times!

Leo is right, in the middle of a big project is not good time to upgrade.

On memory usage, I have discovered a few things that may be of use to you
regarding memory usage/leakage.

Windows 2000 SP2 leaks memory like a sieve (I think it must the the Microsoft
internal name for it), but SP3 is rock solid. On SP2, with IV5.3, take a large
assembly (1.2 GB RAM in use), zoom window, zoom all, rotate model, WHAM, all 2GB
of RAM are in use. IV6 on W2kSP3, 1.2GB RAM in use, does not leak, creates
drawing views without any problem whatsoever.

Jury is still out on XP as I haven't had sufficient time to find out where it's
problems lie.

Also the graphics card and driver version you use can affect the RAM consumption
by Windows, and the information on the Inventor Graphics Card link from Autodesk
support page details this quite well. Same big assembly with Q4 900XGL uses
nearly 200MB more RAM than with a Wildcat VP card. The Quadro is faster though.

Thanks! That really helps as I'm still running win2K SP2, I'll upgrade first
to SP3 and hope for the best. I do have a Q4 900XGL so I'll take a carefull
look at it's drivers as well. Currently I have the 41.04 installed but in
home use I found that 41.03 were more stable... I think Inventor was last
tested with the WHQL 40.72 so I'll give those a try...

That's what I thought... I'll stick with 5.3 for this project then...

Thanks,

Ronald

Backing up the drive is a good idea. I have the Raid function on my
motherboard. However, I do not use it in the Raid mode. Having the Raid,
give me two more hardrive connections on the MB. There is no link between
the drives, except when backing up the boot drive. I do no use the Raid
function to mirror the drives, this takes to long. I link the two drives,
using the Raid function and use a clone drive software. It is important to
break the link between the two drives each time they are cloned.
Just an idea, Bob

Thats interesting John, I never would have guessed that different video cards would affect ram usage that much. As always thanks for the info.
