Disappearing Inventor file

Has anybody experience the disappearance of an assembly file or part file
while saving to a network? I have 2 different customers who both had this
happen.

One was on 5.3, the other was using Inventor 6.

During a save the network had a little coffee break. One customer said he
received an error message. All the ipt changes where saved, but the iam
file was nowhere to be found.

The other customer experienced the same, but I have less details about his
problem. From what I understand the iam or ipt was nowhere to be found
after saving.

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this with Inventor and if you
did, what happened?

Hi Stan.....I've had this happen quite a times now.....Inventor crashes, and the file (part or assembly), disappears without a trace.....It has been mentioned before - but I can't recall a specific fix....I just recover the file from the previous nights backup......We run winn2000 server, and a mixture of 2000 and XP stations.....Sean

I have experienced the same problem saving on a network. The file completely
and totally vanishes without a trace.

We use to have this problem all the time. We upgraded the network interface
card in the server to increase throughput and the problem went away.

Not meaning to pry too much, but about how much did the network card upgrade
cost?

This has happened to us several times as well. I can offer no explanations.
This is not the first time this has popped up on the group.

We have never had any problems with any other programs dropping files over
the network. The problem seems to be isolated to IV. I'd like to know
why - you can easily loose a days worth of work even if you back-up daily.

We run on a simple peer-to-peer W2K network (four users) at 100Mbps. Prior
to a recent upgrade we were running at 10Mbps. The problem existed in both
network set-ups and all versions of IV that we have used (since IV4).

I can recall when we were evaluating IV3 that it was particularly troubled
with our 10 Mbps network. There was a particular error dialogue message
that often popped up however I don't recall what it was. It did however
highlight a certain network dependancy. The issue went away in IV4 - or
perhaps it "morphed" into the problem we speak of today.

If Autodesk is aware of a user hardware or configuration issue that causes
this and a way to troubleshoot it I would be grateful to know. Never have I
heard any stated network requirements to support IV as is the case with
graphics cards.

My suspicion remains focused on IV since as previously stated the problem
appears isolated to it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

What about opening the Last version. That way you will only lose to the
last save.

Good suggestion... I've got 5.3 in my mind were this wasn't an option.

Still, wish it wasn't an issue... it happened again about 15 minutes ago.

Thanks for the replies,

It just confirms my thought that other are have and living with this
problem. Yes it is probably a network issue - speed, speed, speed.

Inventor for some reason must have to remove or delete the file, during a
save. If the network has a hiccup, then boom no more files. Less problem
in 6 with the old versions, big headache in 5.3 (several hours of begging
the IT person to restore the files.)

Group,

A whole mornings worth of IDW work lost in an instant.
Inventor / server problem. (I am still using 5.3)
I'm off to the pub for an hour.........

We have seen something similar. Inventor with its segmented database doesn't appreciate network issues. We however usually see some message about trying to save an unamed part or some such thing. The ipt files save and the assembly just doesn't. If we check our switch ports they do show errors, but not very many. I'm not a network guru but apparently it is quite normal if you monitor you switch port to find occaisional dropped packets. If this gets excessive you will most likely have Inventor issues. - Rich Thomas

"check our switch ports"... excuse my ignorance -
how does one do this?

That would be your network administrators function. It involves using cryptic commands that make unix seem user friendly.

Network Administrator - that's me amongst my
many other titles (i.e. small business).  I asked him ( myself ) if he ( I
) knew the "cryptic commands" that you speak of however he ( I ) replied
"no".  I guess I should consider replacing him (me).

LOL. I hate it when the people I hire (myself) can't answer my questions. Makes me want to fire them (me) and hire someone else (I). Tough to run a business with only "three" good employees. 😉

Well good glad I could help LOL. We have had the most problems with the integrated 3COM chipsets on our mobos (3C905B-TX). The card we have had the best luck with is the Intel Pro100, both the B and the plus versions. These things rock, it might be worth testing. - Rich Thomas

Look for a file same base name but newver or some thing like that added. IV6 makes this file during the save procedure. and it is your new file if it is saved. I found one arter a system crash I had. AUTODESK CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS.
