Design "Assistant" is deleting files

I'm sure this is a network error/issue but basically when attempting to rename files using the design assistant (inv 11) on a network folder, the files get deleted and not renamed. Has anyone seen this before? How would you attempt to diagnose the problem?

Jim: I just tried this again (from the start menu) and it worked correctly. So, you might be on to something.

My renaming does not include a move, but does have subs with iParts (no
iAssemblies). As I noted in another posting in this thread I have done
2 renamings within the last month without data loss. Also, none of the
iParts were renamed.

Well glad it worked for you.

I just tested both going thru the start menu and RMB in the Inventor Open File dialog. Rename without attempting a move deleted the
file in both cases. The part in each test was nested 2 subs deep.

Jim,

I escalated your issue up the chain last week. David Harris used to be
located here in Portland, he is now located in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean, so he is out of sync with us time wise.

David has been unable to reproduce your file delete.

I have also been unable to reproduce the problem that Dave Hoder suggests
happens with a rename on a part two levels deep.

I tried the workflow in both R2008 and R11.

My version of R11 is the FCS version with no hotfixes or service patches
applied.

My IBM ThinkPad laptop is running Windows XP sp2

We believe that you and Dave and TRambach are having trouble and are having
files disappear but until we can nail down just what is common to everyone's
workflow, we're unable to do anything specific.

I just discussed getting this fixed with the guy who is currently
responsible for the code and as soon as we get a reproducible case, we'll be
all over it.

I'm not sure what existing issue Dave Hoder may have been referring to - I
also looked in our issue data base and while there are a number of issues
with the Design Assistant none of them involve file loss. (Dave - if you
have a DID#, please email me).

Thanks Dave and while linking me to the post where
Rene replied helps, I'm going to have to dig some more (Rene has moved on and is
no longer with us - but I should be able to find the issue that he worked
on).

A number of Design Assistant issues were fixed as
we worked on R2008 and Stephen Abel told me that it was possible that there were
changes made that he didn't know about (Stephen owns this now).

I edited one of my parts to be an iPart. It is
nested two levels deep.

I renamed this part and obtained the correctly
named file in the sub-folder as expected.

The part didn't disappear and the assemblies open
as expected.

Seems to be the same symptoms reported by Gary

I wonder if it has to do with the complexity of the
project file? My project file was trivial.

I copied everything to a single folder & edited
the ipj to have only a workspace defined. Same result. File is gone but located
in the OldVersions folder under the old name but with the new part
number.

Do all the missing files have a linked "parameters" file? and if so, is
that "parameters" file linked to more than one .ipt file?

Nope. Same result with a new test part not linked to anything.

I see not why. I sent pics of the DA saying rename and then shown you the error saying it was replace. That is what I would look for is why rename is replace. And I do think you are seeing it you just don't want to fix it because 2008 is coming.

Also I with my files I was able to have the same errors on 4 machines so I know it is not one machine. You said you had no hot fix or sp I do try it with all hotfixes and all sp.

Ok here is what I found Iparts and Iassembly is the issue. I open my idw with just all my details. I did not search for related file I just started to rename work fine. I deleted that file restored my backup went to DA open the same idw just part details but then I searched for related files selected update on the related files then started to rename hit save and here they came I renamed 5 file I got 5 errors telling me I was replacing and poof no moor files all gone no place to find they just ran off my cumputer and went to the hamptons.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding your workflow.

With Design Assistant, I am opening my IAM file. I have only ever used
Design Assistant on assembly files as the "parent" of parts and related
drawings.

It seems like you are opening an IDW file - maybe that has something to do
with why you see what you do and I see what I do?

It could very well be that there is a workflow that I am not following that
will result in the problem that all of you seem to be seeing.

It may also be that the problem was not present in R11 FCS but was
introduced with sp1 or subsequently?

While I do have R10, R11 and R2008 on my machine, I do not have every
possible version, service pack or hotfix installed.

If we can identify a workflow that results in lost files every time with a
release/sp and hardware configuration we want to fix the problem.

To date neither David nor I can reproduce. Last summer it seemed that Rene
could reproduce whatever steps Dave identified but I have not located the
issue which has Dave's files attached - so I don't know what (if anything)
Rene may have done.

Ok more to add the file I just open the idw and no related files I restored that file and went to open the Assembly I and was waiting for it to tell me to resolve files but you know what it didn't and all the new renamed files were in the assembly. So answer me this how? So basic

No I also open the assembly and have the same problem. I did it all ways IAM, IDW. If it can see a iassembly or ipart I get the error but if I don't search for related files like I said and just do the details from the idw works fine and some how ;ike I said it did not ask to resolve the file in the assembly.

Yes I remember 5.3 sp2 stop unfolding of rounds. so you may need to load the sp to find out.
