YUP.... There are reasons why you can't do it.... I'd go with option 3.

Can you tell me how you can rename the file? This
is something that I was trying to figure out. In DA, I can rename Part number

of the time when we start a new project, we create many files with informal
file names,Piston.ipt, Piston.idw,Compression Assembly.iam etc.. Once the
designs are finalized we issue part numbers and drawing numbers and move the
parts to the workgroup search paths using DA, changing their file names to
their "official" names in the process. If DA is not functional in the
semi-isolated environment, how do we handle this workflow? Do we have to
rename them using explorer and manually resolve all the links? Doesn't sound
like much fun.
