Derived parts exporting as empty step files

Anyone ever experience this? (sorry, can't post the files)

I've created two similar but different base files.

I've derived each into parts that have a few different features.

In both cases, step exports of the base solid are fine but exports of the unique parts are empty.

Step exports of their assemblies are complete except for these parts.

Sat exports work fine for both parts and assemblies.

It happens in 2012 SP2 and 2013.

I tried to create a simple example but it exports to step as expected.

I'll file a support request, but thought I'd ask here as well.

I have come across with the similar issue lately. The file was sent to me as STEP file. After placing it in assembly and saving the part (it saves as surface only, BTW), I was trying to derive the part into another part file. And nothing happens. The preview shows the image of the derived part but after accepting it - the file is empty.

The file in question is too large to post it here. (5 Meg). IV2010.

Best Regards,

Igor.

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience.

We need the files to investigate the problem. May you please send me the files (zipped) via email? If it's too huge to use email, please contact me via email too and I can share you an FTP link.

Thanks,

-Austin

May you please send me the files via email?

We will only use them to investigate this problem within Autodesk.

Hi Igor,

Thanks for your prompt help.

The reason of the problem is that Derived Part doesn't support Composite feature, so you got empty after the operation.

A workaround for this case here:

1. Open the "Rear Tractor Section.ipt"

2. Right click on the composite feature and choose Copy Object

3. In the COPY OBJECT dialog, choose "Create New"=Surface, and check on "Delete Original"

4. Click OK--> here the composite will be copied as individual surfaces

5. Delete the composite feature and save the IPT

6. New an IPT file and do the derived feature operation

Please try it and let me know whether it works on your side.

Again, sorry for bringing you into such an inconvenience.

Thanks,

-Austin

Hi Austin,

Yes, it works. Is there any information on limitation of Derive Composite Feature in Help File? I had a brief look but couldn't see any. Thanks for your help!

Best Regards,

Igor.

Hi Igor,

I don't think there is a know issues collection for such cases in the Help document.

I have passed on this problem to our development team; before it gets solved, please use the workaround first.

Thanks,

-Austin

Austin responded by email that he has sent the problem to development, thanks again Austin

I sent in a support request the same time as my original post here. Aside from the auto-replay, I've not heard anything yet from Adesk.
