Cannot extend

When sketching on the face of a solid, using the projected geometry of the edge, I get the error message "cannot extend a curve that is reference geometry" when trying to extend the line.

Can you post a screen capture or attached the offending file.

Inventor 2020, In-Cad, Simulation Mechanical

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file

Projected geometry is what it is.  You would need to Break Link the geometry if you want to edit it.

If it is just a line (and not a curve (understanding that in math a line is just a special curve)) I would simply turn it to construction and trace overtop of the projected geometry (I always do this in all cases).  That way if I make a significant change earlier in the history my entire part doesn't "go sick", only minor bits of sick geometry to fix.

I have tried the construction option, but I still can't extend.

You are constrained to endpoints (and where did you intend to extend to).

I want to extend them to each other (to the apex).

IMO, you should use separate lines with colinear constraints.

Hi tmccar,

Generally speaking I think the wh's collinear constraint approach is the best approach, but attached is an alternate method.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,

Yes, the collinear approach works great, but thanks for the alternative.

Curtis, I like your way. No sketching and constraining is needed with your solution for this special case.
