Can't open .ipt, iam, or .idw files in Inventor

I have just upgraded my PC, and loaded Inventor 2010, as far as I am aware in the same way as it has been installed on my old PC and laptop. How-ever, on this PC if I try to open any normal component, assembly or drawing files from within Inventor, it fails to open them. if I go into Windows Explorer, no problem at all... the only problem that still occurs is not being able to add new components to the assembly!
As far as I am aware, the only difference is this is loaded on Windows & rather than Vista or XP of the other two computers.
Any suggestions?

Regards,

Tref.

Sorry, presume Win7 as you suggest - it is a new PC with 8G of Ram, and everything else that Inventor asks for as far as I am aware - our IT dept bought it for me.
I didn't follow any procedures for installing... I just put the disc in and followed the instructions... This is a fresh install on this PC, whereas the others previously had Inventor 2008 installed if that could make a diference too.

Thanks,

Tref.
