BOM Item Number

Let's say I make a 3-piece assembly and make a full drawing, etc. with a BOM. The items will be numbers 1-3, no problem. Say I replace part 3 with a new part 4. The BOM now goes 1, 2, 4. I know I can manually change the 4 to a 3 in the BOM editor but that means any time I replace parts, delete, or add, etc. I have to manually change stuff.

Where does it get its item #s from? Is it order in which they were added to the assembly? How can the "replaced" item 3 (which is actually item 4) automatically go to the next available number?

Thanks!

Hi drguitarum2005,

You can renumber the whole BOM, and selectively renumber the BOM as described here:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-2130DCB9-58FF-4137-B5DC-44A08700EF8B

I typically just renumber the BOM at the end of the design process and don't pay much attention to the item numbers until then.

I'm not sure it that answers your question, but I thought I'd point that out just in case.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
