Autodesk Inventor 2015 What's New

I know that the last few releases of the new version of Inventor have been towards the end of March timeframe - does anybody remember how much before that they release the What's New documentation? Also, is there any info on when the beta tester NDA is lifted - they're allowed to talk about it?

Just curious and excited to see what they've got in store for 2015. It'd be nice to see what our investment is bringing us!

This is one where "both" are correct or incorrect. The top edge of the hole through a curved face is a 3D poly line, yet the interior of the hole is a circle or if you project the 3d poly line to a flat surface the result is a circle.

Hmm .... I can't find it either, though I am quite certain to have listed it way back when I first switched to inventor with  V. 2011.

It is possible to have listed it in one of the other "wishlist" forms. If so, I stand corrected.

Blair

Yes, the top edge is a polyline, but not when they are projected onto a flat plane which is normal to the axis.

As far as the projection ( view) is concerned, that is in fact a circle, just as it is a circle when you project it within the

sketch environment onto the very same tangent plane.

Which btw is another interesting thing.

If you take the attached IPT, create a tangent plane normal to the hole's axis, then project the hole's geometry, you will end up with a true circle.

Now, if you look at the same view in Inventor's drawing environment, the very same exact projection becomes 2 separate entities.

They are splines in the drawing environment, but Inventor does recognize them as circles with a radius and can be dimensioned as such.

However!

If you create a sketch on the same view and offset one of the arcs, they become pure splines without the ability to dimension them as an arc!

Anyhow, I have tested the 2D output from two different 3D modelers, neither behaves this way.

Here's a quick view of how Inventor places and works with items in a drawing. The items are not really on the drawing sheet, you really need to watch closely.https://chronicle.autodesk.com/Main/Details/afeae328-eb5a-4e1b-ac22-b8049d8e4976

Very nice list! I went through it on the computer I have the Inventor 2015 software on and checked out quite a few different things. Looks to be a pretty solid release, and it's easy to overlook the "under-the-hood" changes they work on to make geometry creation more robust.

Freeform looks also like an interesting development! I was just fooling around with it and I created a pretty cool looking motorcycle gas tank, at least the basic swoopy shape. A step in the right direction for sure!

Gavin Bath has created a post here, he's sharing opinion & an interesting way to present the new features to everyone. Where possible, he has also linked back to Ideastation posts. If you see any other Ideastation posts which can be linked back to it, please share them in the comments, I have no doubt he will jump in and add them where needed.

All in all, it's a very good release of Inventor. It's been just as stable as 2014 for me for the last couple of months. Sure people will be unhappy their area of Inventor hasn't been improved, but the sketch changes are HUGE & should help every single Inventor user on the planet. I can't wait to get stuck into helping people with it.

I think they did a great job with 2015.

A few things that I really like are:

1. They finally labeled the workplanes.  The origin planes and user defined workplanes will show their name when you hoover over them (if they are visible).

2.  The vertical and horizontal constraints, show you what is vert or horiz before you place the constraint.

3.  They cleaned up how constraints are shown in sketch.

A preview is here.

Its little things like this that makes Inventor better to use. I am not a big fan of the "Home Screen", but at least we can turn it off so its not displayed.  Wonder how much RAM it sucks even with it not displayed?

Inventor 2015 is still not available to me on the subscribtion website.

Does anyone know when it will be available for download?

Only AutoCAD, It's verticals & Vault are so far. I think a few more will pop up over the weekend. Suites normally come last.

I thought the Design Suites usually showed up the first week of April.

AutoCAD typically hits the middle of March. From there, it takes up til towards the end of April before the rest of the products hit - things like Inventor, Revit, 3DS Max, Alias stuff, etc. Inventor and Max are typically the beginning of April from what I recall, but it's definitely a prolonged rollout of all the different products. Considering Suites have most all those prodcuts, they're usually last in the line.

Just got the e-mail from ADSK on what is now in the Suites, dang no Showcase. Somehow 3dMax looks far more difficult to learn than Simulation Mechanical and Inventor combined. They discontinued Showcase, so it can't be in the Suites. I thought that they would come up with a simplified, more user friendly version of VRED if there is no Showcase...well as we can see they didn't. Shame.

On the Autodesk page for Factory Design Suite 2015 there is an Astrix next to Showcase.

It may be in the Suite but I wonder if the Astrix will be bad news............(Like 2014 version) but I cannot find what the Astrix means on the web page.

But is it new version of software, or just old Showcase with new badge on it? I heard that becasue of VRED they will not develop showcase any further.
