Autodesk Inventor 2015 What's New

I know that the last few releases of the new version of Inventor have been towards the end of March timeframe - does anybody remember how much before that they release the What's New documentation? Also, is there any info on when the beta tester NDA is lifted - they're allowed to talk about it?

Just curious and excited to see what they've got in store for 2015. It'd be nice to see what our investment is bringing us!

Hi sholmes,

It's typically not before the end of March:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodesk_Inventor

But I don't really have any information about an exact date. The resellers generally rush to get information out ASAP after the information embargo is listed, and that date isn't generally know until a week or so previous if I recall correctly.

Also, keep an eye on this blog, Jamie is generally one of the first to publish the What's New overview:

http://inventortopix.blogspot.com/

And he keeps a link to each years What's New here:

http://inventortopix.blogspot.com/p/whats-new-docs.html

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Curtis,

Thanks for the additional info & links. I'll definitely start following Jamie's blog as well as yours. I'm a CAD geek & I always like to keep up on the trends and advancements of the software.

Looking forward to 2015.

You should then sign up for Beta Testing. The call comes out each fall for beta testers.

Once I receive the What's New info and the exact embargo dates I will be posting both the Inventor 2015 and the AutoCAD 2015 What's New on my blog like normal every year.

Blair, I have in the past signed up for beta testing, I believe it was 2013. I had intended to this year but then got busy with work (lots of projects.) I attempted to sign up but I believe it was too late when I tried.

Hope to be able to beta test again in the future.

Also one final thing, I see that this topic has been escalated, I'm not sure why, no need. Just a discussion.

Seth,

You can still join the INventor 2015 beta - just log on to https://beta.autodesk.com & down otward the bottom of the page, you'll see an "Inventor" link under Open Opportunities. complete the survey that you are presented with & following review you should get access.

Thanks

Chris,

Thanks very much for the info. I was able to get the beta installed, hope to spend some time with it this week. Hope to provide some feedback as well!

Gentlemen

I know this issue was not  fixed in the last two releases ( 2013 and 2014), so did not install.them.

What I am wondering about - directing the question towrads the beta testers - is if the latest release finally

fix the issue of converting arcs and circles into splines when an IDW or Inventor DWG is saved-as and AutoCAD DWG?

If I may trouble you to look at the attached files.

Clearly, the top view in the AutoCAD DWG should show the cross hole as a true circle.

Unfortunately - as you can see - in previous releases they came across as splines instead.

Can someone please verify how is it handled in the new 2015 version ?

( I can wait 'till the end of the embargo if needed )

Thank You

Same as in 2013/2014.

This is a hole on a cylindrical surface projected back to a plane in a drawing view, so it still comes across as a spline. If this was a flat face as opposed to a curved face then you will get a true circle in ACAD.

I don't know how to say this without upseeting someone, but ...

A hole drilled through a cylindrical surface ( or an angled seurface or an irregular surface for that matter ) is still a circle

when viewed from the axis of the hole.

There is no reasonable explanation why it should not be a circle!

This may not matter a hill of beans when modeling and annotating in Inventor, but Inventor is not the end-all of manufacturing.

Said data is often exported and sent to clients or shops to actually produce the finished component.

Please note that the resulted 2D geometry is often used by many CAM softwares, and there is no CAM software out there that would recognize

a spline as a circle or arc!

Specially now that Autodesk is very actively involved in the CAM field, should issues like this be fixed.

This really shouldn't even be a topic of discussion of why it's a spline! It is a circle, and it's representation as anything other is absolutely false

and wrong.

Can someone please explain why noone is taking things like this seriously?

2D documentation is still the norm and 2D geometry transfer is still widely used, so why isn't there any emphasis on making sure that the

2D data is actually correct?

I don't know how it got into Inventor in the first place, and it doesn't even matter.

What matters is that it is absolutely irritating for those who try to use the 2D output ( DWG, DXF or otherwise ) from Inventor for anything other than showing pretty pictures.

Chris, I once again want to apologize for coming across as a jerk, but one would expect more from a leading CAD software company such as Autodesk.

Hi acad-caveman,

From your replies on this thread I get the impression that you are quite familiar with the spline issue. I would encourage you to put that knowledge to work by creating an enhancement request on the IdeaStation, rather than using this thread as a place to vent your frustrations. My understanding is that the Inventor Development team looks at the IdeaStation for user submitted ideas during their development process.

Take the time to explain the issue in the fullest of detail, explain what you've tried (in Inventor and AutoCAD), provide sample files and/or screen shots that illustrates the problem, and so on. Basically, do as much work as possible to make your idea easy to understand for others who have never encountered it.

Most importantly, set your frustration with this limitation aside, and explain the issue in a way that addresses the readers of your IdeaStation idea in a way that will compel them to see that your suggestion is worth investigation, and hopefully implementation. Rather than ignoring what they might otherwise dismiss as someone just complaining about something that they've not ever encountered. Be as respectful and professional, as you would if you were meeting with the developers in person, and I think if you do, you'll see other forum members will read and support your idea, and help push it to the top.

I hope this helps.

Please don't apologize; I whole-heartedly agree.....

I've already reopened the internal discussions as to why this is still the case.

Similar comments from you about the "2013 What's New" were associated with the issue log, (DID1464270) & yes, as Curtis states, there's plenty of focus on the IdeaStation right now....

Thanks

Chris

Curtis, I've done that.

I've also talked with my VAR

I've also posted this on this forum, and back in 2011 one or the replies were:

"""

This is registered to our development team as an enhancement request. Currently the intersection of a cylindrical surface with a non-planar surface is exported as a polyline and not as arc or circle. I have forwarded also your comments to our development team.

"""

And the thread can be found here:  http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Inventor-General/Ok-this-is-ridiculous-Ranting-once-again-on-splines-i...

And please note that I'm not really ranting, nor am I complaining about something which I want my way because that's what I'm used to or

that's how it makes sense to me.

I am complaining about something that is utterly wrong in Inventor, and has obviously been completely ignored, shrugged off and explained away

Hi acad-caveman,

Can you point me to the link for your IdeaStation Idea? I searched but only found this one (see link) that includes the spline issue:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Inventor-IdeaStation/Batch-export-of-dxf-from-assembly-environment-opt...

I just gave that one a kudo, to show my vote of support.

I hope this helps.
