Adding this dimension

When I draw a scetch, on a scetch plane or scetch surface, and want to place dimensions on that scetch. It sometimes says, adding this dimesion will over contrain the scetch. I usually redraw the scetch and then I can place a dimension. why does this happen?

Many times while you're drawing lines in a sketch,
IV is adding constraint automatically. You're probably trying to dimension
something unnecessarily. IV tries to keep you from adding unneeded dimensions
and constraints. If you're puzzled as to what constraints are holding you back,
you can use the "Show Constraints" tool.

Also accept driven dimension when prompted (you
might have to adjust application options/sketch tab ) the driven dimension will
serve its purpose for reference the value and will simply change with the
already constrained geometry.
