ATI Fire GL8700/8800?

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with either of these cards? We're looking at new computers and trying to decide which way to go. The 8800 has a certified driver for Inventor and seems like a good choice, but practical experience usually is the true indication.

Thanks for any info!

ATI and Matrox are considered curse words in this NG. The 8800 may be certified but ATI has a bad track record with Inventor. I suggest looking somewhere else for your CAD card. Quadro and GeForce cards seem to be the most commonly mentioned here but there are many others that will do you good.

I don't think they are all curse words. I have a FireGL2 which I am more than happy with. Of course, ATI didn't develop this card, they just bought it. I haven't tried it in V6 though.

Yes, there are a few that seem to get by with ATI cards but most people seem to have trouble with ATI's. If you're a risk taker then buy an ATI card and take your chances otherwise your money is better spent somewhere else.

I have both the ATI Fire GL 8800 & a Quadro 4 750 XGL. Both yeild very similar performance. For me, the ATI was actually easier to get the dual monitor functions working properly.

I'm a NVIDIA guy, but the 8800 works just as well as the 750 XGL IMO.

Yup,

I can approve that fact, ATI Fire GL 8800 is similar to Quadro4 in Inventor 5.3. We have one computer at our company that is running ATI Fire GL with P4 2.26 GHz, not more problems on that system than the average ones with Quadro cards : )

I have a FireGL2 as well. It works VERY well with Inventor 6 - frame rates
are over 60/sec.

I had an ATI Fire GL2 64Mb on my system and would
get a random crash about 2-3 times a week.  With the Geforce 4 128Mb
card on the same machine that went down to about once a month.  Usually
those crashes have been repeatable software bugs.
