They have a bit too many required fields in their registration form for my
comfort. There are places to get models that don't make me give them a
phone number.

3D Content Central leverages technology developed by S....W.... called 3D
Partstream.NET. 3D Partstream.NET allows companies to create interactive
web based catalogs that use a web server based version of S....W...., to
configure and translate 3D models.

Users can configure and download 3D models (or 2D drawings) of manufacturers
parts in a wide variety of formats, for use in their CAD software of
choice. It just happens that the tool used to perform these tasks behind
the scenes, is S....W....

I spoken with many users that are interested in 3D downloadable purchased
parts. 3D Content Central provides access to numerous vendors 3D models for
FREE, from a single login.

The companies that are listed on the 3D Content Central website benefit from
exposure to a wider audience (i.e. - someone searching for Boston Gear
components will see that SMC products are also available). CAD users
benefit by having easier access to numerous manufacturers 3D components.

Thomas Register's PartSpec is a good one. You fill out a form there too,
but it's not nearly as intrusive. Five required fields, all of them fairly
general.

www.cadregister.com

And no SW rep pawing through the records, calling me up to ask if I'm ready
to switch to a 'real' cad package (this actually happened to my boss).
Sheesh.

uhh, How does this work now? I have been on a static IP address with my
DSL for a few years now - but have switched to a cable connection last week
with a dynamic IP address. This goes through my router which has a hardware
firewall. Just what can they get? I'm not paranoid, my email filters out
about 40 spam emails a day and I actually used my domain address for email -
just a fake email header so it's easier to filter and know where spam comes
from. Just curious how dynamic IP addresses can be used.

Your ISP has a finite pool of IP addresses they give out to users. A
website could narrow it down to the ISP and then (this would likely involve
a court order) find out what IP you had be assigned at that point in time.
