I have 4 acad2000 users (all autocad installs are local) sharing files on a
Novell 5.0 mapped drive. Windows 95 B on Compaq PII 300 networked desktops.

On occasion they will receive a error stating they cant save because the
drawing is in use by another session. It creates a *.ac$ file and procedes.
Sometimes they perform a SAVE AS command to get out of this but it does not
always work.

All users have proper rights and access to the mapped drives. No other
programs give access errors. The problem comes and goes and there are no
other users in these drawing files. What is causing this error and is there
a fix.

Robin,

This is a known issue with Netware , you will find lots of postings in this site
regarding this problem. This problem has been identifyed as being caused by
some versions of Novell's Client 32. You should contact your Novell support
resource to obtain the latest version of Client 32 and try it.

I have been able to dramatically reduce the saving error by changing the
ISAVEPERCENT variable from 50 to 100. This is going to increase the size of
our drawings I assume though. I looked up Novell client data and they just
released a new client32 on 1/13/00. I will download, install, and let you
know if this helps.

Don't believe that it is just a Netware problem. I get the same problem and
I don't use Netware! I use the MS networking functions. I had the problem in
Win98 and now in Win98SE (second edition). I was told that I needed to
update everything, remove all the network cards and then see if I had the
problem, ya right! I just have to keep renaming the drawing until I'm
finished a session, then go back and rename the final drawing to the correct
name....what a hassle, but at least I get to save my changes.

I did purchase and install Win98SE to see if the problem would dissappear,
but it didn't. I don't intend to remove the network cards for the sake of
this bug. If I get paid by Autodesk for my downtime, I will be glad to try
it. I'm sorry that the problem hasn't been resolved yet!

Hi Tore,

I hit this today... Win98 SE on my DELL Laptop I had saved the file 4 or 5
times and it was going fine. Then I get a read only message. The only
difference here was I was working In Word 2000 and not AutoCAD. I have seen
some strange stuff in 98 SE, but nothing reproducible yet. AutoCAD doesn't
handle the file locking, the Operating System does. So you may be having
problems but it is most likely Microsoft here.

What Jerry is talking about is a very well known problem with the Novell
Client. I ran nothing but Novell servers for many year and was bit by Novell
Client problems way too many times;-)...

Thanks for a second opinion. I appreciate knowing this from a "third" party.
So now I have to find "where" the file locking is handled. I've done "live"
updates too, but still no change. Win98 is in a constant state of needing an
update.

I have installed the new version of novell's client32 (3.2) and set my
ISAVEPERCENT back to 0. I have been testing for 4 days now with no errors -
knock on wood...
