smiley face cousins in design center

I have installed a network copy of 2000i on our workgroup server. All went
well during the installation or so I have deluded myself into thinking it
has. Now I'm trying to setup the workstation (client) end by using my
machine as the prototype. when I access "design center", all the items in a
drawing (e.g., blocks, layers, text styles, etc.) are shown with the flying
windows logo instead of the normal icons. I also get the following dialog
box message:

The operation completed successfully,
[c:\program files\AutoCAD 2000i\acdcsymbols.arx]

Then I'm returned to the AutoCAD editor.

Any thoughts on this quirk are appreciated.
