I have installed Inventor Professional 2014 and was told I had to install Service Pack 1 to be able to use it on Windows 8.1. Clicking on the downloaded .msp file causes a message that a program made by Serif wants to open the file. Suggestions?

Sounds like you have a file extension for .msp set to open for another program instead of the default. You will need to change that either in the registry, in the file extension manager, or with Open with...
