%roamablerootfolder%

We use "roamable profiles" here at school, so the students can log on to any
computer and it always has their desktop/program settings/paths the way they
were the last time they logged in.

This hold true for AutoCAD profiles also. Their AutoCAD profile maintains
itself from on station to another. Well, it is SUPPOSED to stay the same
from one station to another. And it does for approximately 95% of the
students. But, invariably, each semester three or four students open
AutoCAD to see various error messages: "Unable to load profile, some
settings from last session will be lost...", "Cannot find acad.cui..."

It seems to tie mainly to the fact that that first setting in the AutoCAD
search path:

C:\\Documents and Settings\\black\\Application Data\\Autodesk\\AutoCAD
2008\\R17.1\\enu\\support

doesn't "resolve" properly. When I go to check it on one of the student's
that is having the problem, it is:

%roamablerootfolder%\support

Obviously, "roamablerootfolder" is some sort of environment variable that
isn't getting stored/reset correctly.

Anyone else that always people to logon to more than one machine have any
problems maintaining profiles?

your Windows profile is bad, have IT recreate it on the offending machine.

I have the exact same problem, Craig! I've done a bit of digging on it, but don't have time to post my full-on detailed report here.

I also work in an educational environment, which has very specific challenges most businesses do not face (and, consequently, Autodesk does not focus on). I think we'd be good contacts for each other to have & I definitely want to talk with you about this more.

Can we exchange contact info?

Actually, I have an initial question:

Are you using a special shortcut on the Desktop with the "/p" variable to call an ARG file from a network folder?

I came across the following ADSK forum topic that got me to thinking the ARG file is tied into this problem somehow.

Even if you don't use a default ARG file, it will help narrow down what the actual cause is.

Matt,
Are you still monitoring this thread? Obviously I lost track of it, and am
just now ready to do more checking into the problem....

Well, I moved the ARG files to the C: drive on all our workstations this semester & although the problem doesn't appear to be as bad, it is still happening (2-3 times so far).

One of those students, though, when asked, said she didn't fully log off one station before logging into another (i.e. profile save while profile load). This has definitely caused Windows profile corruption before & might explain the ARG corruption in this particular case.

Anyway, Craig, please contact me back at your convenience.

Thanks,
Matt
