hostname using dns alias?

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can use a DNS cname as the hostname in a flexlm licence file?

I'm thinking if the server dies we could moved the NIC into a second server so the host id is the same and just change where the cname points.

What do you think?

Cheers, Andy.

You can use the full DNS name.

I know realservername.domain.com would work.

I'm wondering whether a service alias cname such as flexlm.domain.com initially pointing to realserver.domain.com but able to be redirected would work.

So you could move the NIC to a new machine called realservername2.domain.com, update the cname to point to realserver2.domain.com and it would work.

One final clarification. 🙂

So the host in the flexlm licence file would not change as it would be the cname flexlm.domain.com.

The host ID would not change as the NIC would be moved to the new server.

I don't know for sure. I have not tried that.

This will work out.
In some cases you can also replace the hostname with the special keyword:
"this_host". Then you won't need to change it when moving it to a new
machine.

Use a virtual Serrver, you can set the NIC.

I think this should work out. Essentially a
requirement is that it should be resolvable.

The only way to find out is to really try it. Some
times you can be surprised about what might come up.
