flexlm downtime - grace period

Hello,

I'll migrate the flexlm server (with all offline licences checked in).

when users are with their sw open (and consuming licenses) what is the default grace period in which they can still work while the flex server is shutdown?

Can i change this value via options file (i'm not sure that timeout option is the right one...)

Thank you!

Hi,
You cannot specify that time. But you have enough time to restart the server
or do some maintenance like upgrading that does not take more than a few
minutes.

Hi,

We're virtualing servers, so it's a little bit more than few minutes...

Either way as i know for instance that some vendors have a grace period for like 8 hours or something like that.

What happens in the meanwhile? Inventor closes up the session when it realizes that license server is down?

Thank you for your response!

If the client cannot access the server the user have the chance to save the
work and then have to exit the program.

We Virtualized our Flex Manager a while ago.
Couple things to keep in mind.
The virtual server name must be identical with the Hardware server which means they can't be on at the same time.
The Mac Address must be identical which means you have to give the virtual server a virtual Mac address.

If you change names or Mac addresses you'll need new license files and have to address how each workstation locates the license server.

Hi,

I'm intending to re-generate the license files as the mac address will probably be different.

About the server name, I believe that keeping the name is enough for the Inventor/ACad network client to keep working and not making me re-image the deploy.

I just say this because in the installations, when you indicate the server name, it just seems to do a simple search via network neighborhood (wins) or dns at most.

Are you sure that it keeps track of the server's mac address? That wouldn't make much sense from the developers, but it could be. Hope not!!

The License File keeps track of the MAC address. If the MAC changes, your license immediately becomes invalid. As for the server hostname, I recommend using THIS_HOST in the LIC file as opposed to the actual server name. This way you can change the virtual server name as needed and clone back the correct virtual MAC if it changes. It's about the best way in a virtual enviroment. You can always change the System Environment Variables on the client to point to a new license server and override anything that was created in the deployment at any time.

When i asked if you were sure about keeping track of the mac adrdess, i meant the client, not the license file. So we're saying the same. If i regenerate a license for a different server witth different mac address but the same name, when i start inventor i.e., it will be ok.

As for the variables...very nice pointed!! does flex recognizes these variables in the license file directly?

You are exactly right. As long as the client can connect to the same hostname with the License Manager installed, that is all that matters. The MAC only involves the license file.

As for the variable, the System Environment Variables on the client override the licpath.lic file and forces a connection to a specific host. As for the THIS_HOST variable... that goes right into your license file in replacement of the server hostname. FlexLM recognizes this directly.

So, one more thing just to make sure i got it right.

I understood perfectly the server/licence file variable thing.

On the clients side, if i set up also a variable (would that be THIS_HOST as well??) does the license client reads it as well? For instance, if i was to change the server name, instead of re-installing the apps (which i find it a very poor way of mine), can i set up an environment variable pointing to the new server? would this work as well?

Yes, you would go into System Properties and set up a system environment variable called ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE and give it the value of @SERVERNAME where servername is whatever server you want the client to point to. Don't forget the @ sign. This will override any server that was listed in the deployment. Reinstalling the apps because of a server change would be a horrible waste of time.

THIS_HOST is only a variable for the license file itself in the Network License Manager.

Here is one way I've used.

lolol...Indeed it is! I was just anxious to know about this...

Travis, you've been really helpful. Thank you very much!!

Interesting this. The several ways a license server can be found and to know their precedence. knew the 1st and last ones.

I shall take a closer look at your script.

Thank you very much
