Windows 2000pro/server or Linux file server?

We are currently running a Novell file server with Win98 client machines.
We are getting a new server and I'm questioning whether we need Win2000pro
or Win2000 server running on it. We have around 18-25 computers logging
onto the server. They will be a mix or Win98 and Win2000pro machines. Our
server is strictly a file server. No email or web services. Am I going to
run into any problems using Win2000pro instead of Win2000 Server? Are there
any performance increases if I use Win2000 Server? Or should I bag Windows
on the file server and use Linux? Is anyone currently running a Linux file
server? Any pros or cons?

Thanks,

Steve

Win 2000 Pro has a limit of 10 tcp connections. Only 10 people will be able to connect to the server at any one time.
My choice between 2000 Pro and 2000 Server for 18-25 people? 2000 Server. 25 won't connect.

Linux: Officially Autodesk does not support any NOS other than Microsoft. That said I know of a number of people who are
successfully running linux as a NOS on the file server without problems. I'm sure some of them will comment here.

Thanks Jason,

I thought there was some limit of connections.
Hopefully someone will post who has a successful Linux file server running
with some input.

I have a dell NAS device, which is a clone of the Snap server, and runs
Linux. as Jasopn said, you would be running a non-sanctioned setup. But I
have never had any problems. If you go with the snap server, or dells's
clone, or anyone elses clone, it will be just file server, nothing else.
Think of it as sticking a huge dik on the network, that is accessed by
TCP/IP, but it is just a big disk drive.
