What say you? Error[1.5.-12]

Server: Win2K Server, service pack 2?
Client: WinXP Pro
Cad Version: A2K2, Service pack 1
When starting Acad, the program loads, but then I get an error stating that
it can't find the license server and prompts for the server name or license
file. After specifying the server name I get the following alert box:

AutoCAD 2002 Alert
The network license manager was not able to get a valid license. If this
problem continues, please contact your system administrator.
Error [1.5.-12]

Any ideas?

Can you see the server, when you browse? Sounds like a network issue. If
this just happened on a system that has been behaving normal then that's my
suspicion. If you're setting up things for the first time, it sounds like a
license file is looking at the wrong server & NIC address.

The workstation works fine for other programs - browse the network, map
drives, nothing seems amiss. I do have other machines running A2K2 off the
same server, both Win2K machines and A2Ki, without a problem.

Still baffled (what's new),
Mike

When I got that message in the past, the licpath.lic file in AutoCAD's root
installed directory was looking at a different server, once I supplied the
correct server name it worked. But in order for that to happen, the NIC MAC
address must be correct in that file too.

In my case, the server name was misspelled. The NIC address was correct.
If it can find the server you get the prompt to supply the server name, if
you can't connect then, check the NIC address. If those are both correct,
is there any chance you're exceeding your available licenses? Check the
FlexLM status to see who is using the licenses and what is available.

It is easy to be fooled into thinking is healthy at a workstation because
Browse the network and other Explorer functions work. The issue is that
just because Explorer works does not give you an indication of what protocol
you are using. The license manager uses TCP/IP only. If TCP/IP is broken
Explorer may use another protocol but the license manager will be unable to.
So, the two best tools built into the operating system for testing TCP/IP
connectivity are PING and IPCONFIG.

Try PING
and IPCONFIG /ALL

is the hostname of a remote system you are checking TCP/IP
connectivity to. If it is successful it will echo several lines that look
like the following:
Pinging paradise.ipdomain.com [192.000.000.000] with 32 bytes of data
Reply from 192.000.000.000: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=125
Reply from 192.000.000.000: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=125
Reply from 192.000.000.000: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=125
Reply from 192.000.000.000: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=125

Ping statistics for 192.000.000.000:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 30ms
Make sure that the IP address echoed is really the IP address on the machine
you think you are pinging!

If Ping fails or echoes the wrong IP address, you have name resolution
problems on that station or other TCP/IP connection problems.

IPCONFIG /ALL give you all of the local TCP/IP connection properties.

Hi,

check your debug log-file on the server. The problem is NOT with your
network! The statement in the error message "valid license" together with
the errorcode 12 to me would indicate that you are trying to run a product
that you do not have a license for. Not meaning that you didn't buy one and
so on but the propability is high that you have a wrong product licensed int
the licensefile.

Check the licensefile! For Vanilla ACAD 2002 the INCREMENT part of the file
should look something like this:

INCREMENT 41100ACD_2002_0F adskflex 1.000 permanent 10 \
VENDOR_STRING=commercial:permanent SUPERSEDE DUP_GROUP=H \
ISSUED=2-oct-2001 ck=176 SN=700-12345678 SIGN=F5DF6F74C3D0

The 41100ACD_2002_0F part means ACAD 2002. If this is something else, you
have to ask for a new file!

Or maybe you actually have a vertical product (MDT6, MAP5, ADT3.3 etc) and
have installed your ACAD2002 from a Vanilla ACAD deployment-tree? This being
the case, uninstall and reinstall using the Vertical product
deployment-tree. Vanilla ACAD2002 cannot take a license from a vertical
product licensefile!

Steve,
I don't think the problem is with the licpath.lic file since A2K2 is working
on Win2K machines installed using the same licpath.lic file. We only have a
couple of people accessing a 5 seat network license, so that shouldn't be a
problem.

Thanks for the response,
Mike

Jerry,
I can ping the server without a problem - no packets lost, time less than
1ms. I also don't see anything wrong with inconfig /all.

The only protocol we are using is TCP/IP, so my connection to the server
proves that TCP/IP is working.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help,
Mike

Petri,
Thanks for the suggestion.
The log file shows the same version number and same vender_string as yours.
The differences I saw would be expected; number of licenses, issued date,
ck, serial number, and sign value.

We are running nothing but A2K2 - no vertical products, and haven't had any
problems except with this one XP machine.

Thanks again,
Mike

Mike,
There is a document available with this exact error.
I am not sure if you have already seen it, but it can be found here:

Mike,
So, the license server is working for all but this one station? Try
starting Acad on the offending station. Next, open the log file on the file
server. Do you see a 'hit' from the workstation? If you do, there should
be an error describing why the license was denied. If you can not find a
hit from that station it means Acad is unable to find the license server.
Possible reasons are name resolution errors (did you verify the IP address
echoed by ping?) or packet filtering which can occur at the workstation,
server or a router. Also make sure that the hostname entry in LICPATH.LIC
is correct.

Oh, yes, Yes! I think you're on to something here.

I checked and Microsoft Firewall Client was running, so I disabled it (we
have a firewall on the LAN). But that doesn't seem to have solved the
problem. Now I guess I need to find out what else might be interfering on
those ports.

Thanks,
Mike

Jerry,
Attempting to open acad on the problem station does NOT produce an entry in
the log file. Teresa's knowlege base article, I think, is pointing in the
right direction. The offending workstation was running firewall software,
so I turned that off. My guess is there is still something blocking port
access.

Time for some more research.

Hello again!

please get Active Ports from http://www.ntutility.com to check the ports
open / reserved to resolve te dilemma...

/Petri

Also try setting LM_LICENSE_FILE (ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE) to the IP address
of the Flex server!

Just to note, you should use ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE due to precedence problems with LM_LICENSE_FILE.

Petri,
The ActivePorts program looks like exactly what I need.

I guess I don't understand your second suggestion. Is that a setting on the
server or the client?

Thanks for the help, I had found a port scanner that showed port 2080 as
blocked, but had no way to know what was doing the blocking. It looks like
ActivePorts will solve that problem.

Okay.

I ran ActivePorts on the offending station and it didn't show any of the
required ports (2080, 27000-27010) as being in use. In fact, with
ActivePorts running while starting A2K2, I didn't even see any activity on
those ports. That I don't understand.

Hi,

on the Workstation select My Computer and Properties, Advanced, Environment
Variables and Add ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE and give it a value of the
IP-address of the License Server

I have not used Active Ports but I am guessing that it records who/what is
using a given port address. It may not show if a given port is being
blocked. So, unless this package can send a test packet between two
machines using a specific port address it may not be conclusive in
determining your problem.

Jerry,
I never was able to determine the problem on the workstation, I ended up
formatting the hard drive and re-installing everything - there were other
gremlins in the machine. Everything is working fine now. I spent several
times as long trying to find/solve the problem than I did with the
re-install.

Oh well, I now know more about how the license server works than before.

Thanks for the help,
Mike Weaver
