Valid license could not be obtained Error [1200 .5. -96]

We have an issue where 3DS max runs fine on the license server host, but if we run it on another machine the following error is returned:

"A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager. Try again. Error [1200 .5. -96]
The software license is not available [Error 1200] "

We tried to Google this and got no direct hits. Any suggestions?

-96 License server machine is down or not responding.

See the system administrator about starting the server, or make sure that you're referring to the right host (see LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable).



This basically means that your other machine isn't connecting to the license manager. Make sure you can ping it by hostname and that the response is the correct IP address. You might also make sure there isn't a firewall blocking access.

Will using the licensepath.lic file overcome this issue?

The software will look for a valid LICPATH.LIC file, but a ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE system environment variable may work better.
