Hi Doug,
I've downloaded twice now, using the DownThemAll addon for Firefox. The download completes without errors and all files but one extract OK.
The same file, Autodesk_3ds_Max_2011_English_Win_32-64bit.part1.exe\support\Partners\Composite\x64\runtime.cab appears to be the one at fault. I have tried extracting by running the .exe or by opening the .exe with 7z. 7z reports as follows: "CRC failed in 'support\Partners\Composite\x64\runtime.cab'. File is broken."
Cheers,
Sean
It sounds like the Firefox extension might be part of the problem. Many have posted screen shots of the WinRAR executable displaying a CRC error. The solution has always been to get a good download. Try the built in Download Manager in Firefox, Internet Explorer 8, another computer, or from another location such as at home. Then double-click on the WinRAR self extracting executable when you have downloaded all parts.
I’d recommend not trying to extract the WinRAR self extracting executable and additional archives with an alternative application. I just tried this with 7-Zip on the Max archives I downloaded from the Subscription Center and Installed Max from. When extracting with 7-Zip I received several errors. It extracts properly and installs when I let WinRAR do the extraction by launching the executable.
Good thing I have plenty of download allowance this month... downloading 3GB again without using the accelerator. Will let you know. Thanks for the rapid replies.
OK, downloaded using FF's native downloader. Exactly the same problem. Tried on 2 different computers.
This is the third time I've downloaded a 3GB file. Can't say I'm keen to download it a 4th time when it appears to be a problem with the source file.
Try using Internet Explorer 8. The issue is unlikely to do with the source file or it would be affecting everybody who is downloading the file. What kind of network are you downloading from? You might also ensure that you don't have a separate download manager, accelerator, or an on-access virus scanner running, as it can corrupt a large download like this.
I have ADSL 2+ with 1.7 MB/s download speed. My local LAN is gigabit with TPLink router and switch. I have no problems downloading other large files (linux ISOs, various applications etc).
I have Sophos AV which is very clear when it touches a file and it's not saying anything. I did actually turn it off as a test and it didn't change anything.
I am reluctant to believe it's something local because despite having downloaded 3 times, it's consistently the same file that cannot be extracted whether I use the self-extracting exe or 7z. Perhaps the image has been updated and I'm the first to notice the problem?
I generally avoid Internet Exploder because it's a piece of junk but in the interest of completeness, I will download once more. Back in 30 mins...
That's absolutely ridiculous. 😄
At what point do you just throw your arms in the air?
Agreed 🙂 I've now used 16GB of my 70GB for the month so I'm not keen to try downloading again until someone at Autodesk does a download test of the file at http://studentsdownload.autodesk.com/ef/47549/273/3794273/Autodesk_3ds_Max_2011_English_Win_32-64bit... and verifies the problem.
Oh, you are with the Student Community. The Download methodologies for the Student Community are much different than those for Subscription Center. The composition of the files is still WinRAR archives and self extracting executables. In this forum you are going to get responses specific to the Subscription Center. I’d make two suggestions at this point:
1. Log into the Student Community and go to the FAQ section. If you don’t find the information you need there is a link on this FAZ to the forums. This page also has a three tabs for FAQs, Ask a Question, and Answer a Question.
2. The Student community offers this advice in the FAQ:
Our download files are very large. On a typical system setup, downloading the applications will take approximately 1 to 3 hours. The length of the download time is dependent on many factors such as internet speed, computer speed, site traffic. We highly recommend that you use broadband or better to optimize the download experience.
You have the option to install the software using any DVD copy – remember that you will need to activate your student license with a serial number obtained from the community. Your serial information is available in the "My Downloads" tab in your Education Community profile. You may request a DVD copy through the Autodesk Product Trial Center.
You might consider ordering the trial media.
I have logged into the Student Community and am currently downloading the Max files. I am unfamiliar with this process as I do not generally work with Support for the Student Community. I notice that the Student Community uses a special download manager and all downloading is done inside the browser page which includes Serial Number, Product Key and links to the downloaded files when complete. I’ll try them out when this is done and report back here.
When the download completed the Browser brought up a dialog box asking me if I wanted to run the executable. After clicking the affirmative to that dialog box the WinRAR executable started. Clicking the Install button extracted the two files to the default location (C:\Autodesk\Autodesk_3ds_Max_Design_2011_English_Win_32-64bit) and when complete launched the Max installer.
I have also looked at this download page in more detail and see there is a link that expands the page to provide direct links to the two downloads.
Within the FAQ there are links to this forum for Installation and Licensing support. This forum can help with support for Installation and Licensing but since the community here is mostly made up of non-Student users download support is provided within the Student Community.
I think considering the time and bandwidth that you have invested in this the best approach is to request a Trial media then use the Serial Number and Product ID provided by the Student Community. A local Reseller may have a copy of this Trial media on hand.
