UNIX/samba server

My network administrator wants to put all of our drawings on a unix/samba
server. We currently run a NT network with 20 seats of autcad rel 2000
using the license manager. Is this possible and what are our risks? Have
others tried this and with what results? I'd appreciate your input.

Okay, the easy part first. The adlm will not (meaning won't / not going to / can't be
made to / isn't a version for / isn't going to happen) run on a *nix server. The only
platforms supported by the adlm are windows and netware.

As far as the file storage...It should work...but take a look at
http://support01.autodesk.com/knowledgebase/html/121404.htm (watch for wrapping). What
that means is that if you start using a *nix server and it gives you problems... It's not
our fault, it's yours. (Unofficially there are a number of people who would help you out,
but officially autodesk doesn't have to).

Your risks? Worst case you have 20 seats of acad (and the users who run it) sitting around
while the network guy tries to figure out what's happening with autocad.
Basically you will be moving from a supported environment to an unsupported one because
the network admin likes *nix better.

To add to Jason's comment there are known issues with case sensitivity of
filenames and also the use of extended characters. We have had reports from
the field of drawings not being found on the server when Samba is used.

I set an office up using a samba on a linux server. I've had no reported
problems for almost a year. They only had about 5-6 CAD users.

We have our drawing files on a linux server running samba 2.07 and our adlm
server on a win98 machine. All is working fine.

We also are running Samba under Linux and have the AdLM on a win98 box. Uptime on the Linux box is over 80 days now since I last shut it down for hardware changes. We have 8 licenses so we wouldn't be considered large, but I'm happy with this solution.

If Autodesk ported our LDD2i to Linux, Micro$oft wouldn't see me for dust!

I forgot to mention... this samba box is also running software RAID5 with IDE drives.

Hey Brock,

Have you upgraded to Samba 2.2 yet?

No, haven't felt a need to do the upgrade to 2.2 yet. We are running whatever came with Mandrake 7.1... as you can tell, I'n not too concerned with keeping it all 'up to date'. I find that with Linux, it's unnecessary to keep following the kernels and related packages unless there is a specific problem or security issue. New releases are typically to introduce new features and compatibilities rather than to fix buys (as some other o/s's tend to do). If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
