To confirm my understanding re VPN

My understanding is that now that the network license costs more, it is acceptable to use FlexLM over a WAN. Therefore, if I understand this correctly, it is acceptable to set up some at home or on the road staff memebers to connect into the office via vpn, so that they can check out a license and use AutoCAD. However, so far as I am aware, tehre is not currently any other license checkout facility. Is this correct? Also, has anyone done this - I would not want to be working on files across vpn, but if the connection is only serving to maintain a link to the license manager, and autoCAD is running locally, and the user is working off local copies of the files, tehn there should not be any notable performance issues. Has aanyone tried this? Is vpn over a dial-up adequate to maintain a license?

We have set up a VPN server and I have successfully
obtained a license from home. As you stated the files I'm working with are all
stored on the local drive and I just use the VPN connection to maintain contact
with the license server and it works like a charm. I have a cable connection at
home and we have a DSL connection at the office so I don't know about dial-up
performance but I think it should still work fine as the license heartbeat
requires minimal bandwidth.

I've tried this without success on dial up yet. How are you actually
connecting to the server? Are you joining the domain? or pinging a server
in a different manner?

Oh, Charles you've got it correct. As long as a client can authorize
against the server using FlexLM you can legally run over a WAN (if you own
network licenses).

Steve:

Our IS guy set the VPN up so I don't know all of the ins and outs but I'm
pretty sure I did not have to join the domain with my home computer. The
only other thing I remember doing is adding a line in the "Hosts" file on my
home computer to map the IP address of the license server to the server name
contained in the license file. Other than that I'm using the tools contained
in Windows 2000 to connect to the VPN. Hope this helps and good luck.
