Tips on the use of the downloaded product files

Many of the product files that are provided on the Subscription download pages are WinRAR self-extracting archives. If the product requires only one file there will be a single .exe. If the product requires more than one file the additional files will have the .rar extension. All files for the product should be downloaded to the same folder.

Three things to note when double-clicking on the downloaded .exe:

  • The Destination folder is the location where the files will be extracted to. For many products the location of this folder is C:\Autodesk. You may wish to change this destination folder to an alternative location such as a network share if you intend to install the product to several computers.
  • The Install button extracts the archive to the Destination folder and when complete launches the .exe that installs the product.
  • When the install is complete the extracted files will remain. The content of this folder is the equivalent of the DVD you would have received for previous releases.

Here is an update as I have a tip for those of you having download troubles.
Assuming you have not modified the Download Settings (from the download pages, left column of links) there are two download methods on the download page. Browser Download and Download Manager which uses the Akamai download accelerator. I often recommend using the Download Manager links first. If you have trouble then use the Browser Download links. There is also a handy Select All feature for those needing to download many parts (.exe plus one or more .rar files) or many products for Suites.

Tip: Try using the Browser Download link in Firefox which has a download manager built in. Many customers are using this and reporting success. I have tested it myself by downloading the AutoCAD 2011 x64 Archive.

Some information about downloading from the Student Community: The Student Community uses the Akamai Download Manager in a different way than that the Subscription Center does. The first time you download you will be presented with a file called installer.exe to install the Akamai Download Manager. When this has been installed the download will begin with status displayed in the browser page. Where there is more than one file for the application one file is downloaded at a time.

The files are downloaded to a folder in this location on the hard drive before the WinRAR self extracting executable is launched (Note these files remain after the applications installer is extracted):

     x64 OS: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Akamai

     x86 OS: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Akamai

Those who wish not to use this download manager can use links at the bottom of the page by clicking the link for those having trouble with the download. Links for the WinRAR self extracting executable and if additional files are required WinRAR archive files will be added to the bottom of the page.
