Subscription expired - bought new computer

I was on the subscription for AutoCAD LT 2009. I let it lapse, but just before I got off it I updated my AutoCAD LT to 2010. I have just recently purchased a new computer and when I went to install AutoCAD on the new computer it did not have the update obviously. Is there a name of the file I could search for on the old computer or can I get an update file to bring me back to 2010?

I also need to have another Activation code which I believe I can just get by calling.

Thanks for any replies,

Dan Middleton

If your old computer still “alive” you can retrieve your LT 2009 license.
If AutoCAD LT 2009 still installed in the old machine, simply use the Portable License Utility to transfer the license to new machine.
If AutoCAD LT 2009 is not anymore installed but you did not have formatted or replaced the hard disk, install AutoCAD LT 2009 and run the Portable License Utility to export the license.
To run the PLU, go to the AutoCAD LT 2009 program group, click over Portable License Utility.
When you start the PLU, clicking the help button will open the online Help where you can find a very complete online help with practical examples showing all the steps to Export/Impport a license.
For the license activation issues, please contact directly Autodesk at http://www.autodesk.com/activationhelp

Please forgive the Autodesk canned support response. The way I understand it is that you have AutoCAD LT 2009 media and you downloaded the installation files for AutoCAD LT 2010 from the Subscription site before your Subsciption lapsed. If that is the case, essentially you are looking to find out how you can install your AutoCAD LT 2010 onto your new computer because you don't have the media.
What you might consider doing (if you cannot find the file on your old computer) is purchasing a lost media disc for AutoCAD LT 2010. Since you already own the license, buying the actual media is cheap. I think the average cost is about $25 or so. Autodesk is going to find that download distribution is going to cause a lot of problems similar to yours, especially for those customers who let their Subscription lapse.
As for the Autodesk response, what he suggests for your AutoCAD LT 2009 is wrong. Your license for AutoCAD LT 2009 LT is expired since it was auto-fulfilled to AutoCAD LT 2010 and allowed to lapse. Current Subscription customers are allowed to run prior release versions up to 3 versions back. However, if your Subcription is not up-to-date then you can only run the latest upgraded product. Even so, once you have the 2010 media or find the file, you should have no problem installing and activating your product as you have said.
Good luck!

Thank you TravisNave,

Autodesk just clip and send email responses. They do not appear to actually read anything. I will try what you said when I get home as I do not have my OLD computer here right now

Dear Middleton,

Please accept my apologies for the incorrect answer I may provided.
I understood in my first read that your problem was to try to retrieve your 2009 license. My answer, was not a canned response, was a response to the problem I understood you where experiencing. Is the procedure to retrieve a license form a computer, to export to another, for products until 2009 versions.
Once again, my apologies for any inconvenient my answer could cause to you.

Regards

When I went home, I tried the Portable License Utility for AutoCAD LT 2010. It asked me to sign in, and then mentioned that it will transfer my license to Autodesk? Does this mean that the license will be gone from my "OLD" computer? I am just a little nervous that I may lose my license and will not be able to get it back, and then I will not be able to use AutoCAD. I received an email from Autodesk and they mentioned that because I upgraded over subscription, the old license (AutoCAD LT 2009) is no longer valid.

I really do not want to get stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can just see problems with Autodesk in the future, does anyone have any experience with PMU?

I want to make sure I understand the issue so feel free to clarify for me if I'm not properly understanding your issue.

Your 2010 product will require a separate activation from your 2009 product. You won't be able to use the PLU in 2009 to transfer the license to 2010. Likewise, you won't be able to use the License Transfer Utility in 2010 to transfer the license to 2009.

Starting with the 2010 product releases, the PLU was replaced by the License Transfer Utility. The License Transfer Utility allows you transfer stand-alone licenses between machines but requires that you are transferring the license to the same product and serial number as the one you exported from. The License Transfer Utility requires you to log in to your Autodesk account in order to do the transfer. The license is then exported from the machine and "parked" on Autodesk servers. At that point, your product will have been deactivated. You can then move to another machine with the same product and serial number installed, run the License Transfer Utility there, log in again and import that exported license.

There is a video explaining this whole process here:

Let me know if this does not answer your question or if you need additional information.

FYI, if you are under Subscription you can continue to run a licensed copy of AutoCAD LT 2009 if you request a prior usage form. Autodesk or your Reseller should be able to help you with this. You cannot use the PLU or the LTU to transfer a 2010 to 2009 or vice-versa as they are different license types. I generally recommend avoiding the PLU or the LTU as you tend to get into a bind if it doesn't work. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Ok I will try and explain to make sure all understand the situation as it stands.

A couple years back, my company (me) purchased AutoCAD LT 2009. I received the disks (both on DVD and on CD). At the same time, I signed up for Subscription. I continued on AutoCAD LT 2009 for almost a year with no updates. Just before the annual Subscription time, I figured I was not that busy at my side jobs and that I did not want to pay for another year of subscription so I let it lapse.

Just before my one year subscription expired, I upgraded my AutoCAD LT 2009 to AutoCAD LT 2010, obviously over the internet. I believe I have the full set of files on my computer for AutoCAD LT 2010, otherwise it would not work (correct?).

FFWD a couple years. Just this week, I purchased a new computer as my old one is starting to grow cobwebs if you know what I mean. As I do not have disks for AutoCAD LT 2010, I installed the older AutoCAD LT 2009. When I went to run it, it told me to activate which I attempted to do and it would not let me, so I contacted Autodesk via email. They wrote back and told me that the license I had for AutoCAD LT 2009 was no longer valid as I have upgraded to AutoCAD LT 2010. This brings me to my current situation. I do not know if AutoCAD LT 2010 will install over my network using the setup.exe file that is on there, so I am just a little cautious at the License Transfer Utility. After watching that video, it looks like I can probably go back to the old computer if I had to.

If I installed AutoCAD LT 2010 over the internet, does it give me a separate serial number?

Okay, I understand your questioning. Working backwards...
Yes, if you downloaded and installed AutoCAD LT 2010 from the Internet, you have a separate serial number. You can find this on the Help > About screen in your installed AutoCAD LT 2010 on yoru old computer. It's also in the Windows registry.
Since you upgraded your 2009 to 2010 and let your Subscription lapse, your 2009 license is expired. In fact, continuing to use 2009 is actually violating your license agreement. You will not be able to activate 2009 due to this.
You should be able to install your AutoCAD LT 2010 on your new computer and activate it (or use the LTU to transfer the license from the old machine to the new one.) If you cannot seem to install it from your own download, you may have to purchase a media replacement kit from Autodesk or a Reseller.

Thank you very much Travis, you are very helpful. I have tried to install the product, and now it tells me that I cannot install this product on this operating system which I am assuming is because it is Windows 7 64bit and the AutoCAD version I have is 2010_English_Win_32bit. When I sent away for replacement software it says I can only get replacement software for the version I bought. I hope that they both are in the box
Dan Middleton MD Design
Message 12 of 17

Oops! Yeah, that happens. It will all work out for you though. It's correct that your downloaded 32-bit version will not install on Windows 7 64-bit. However, when you purchase the product, you are purchasing a license. The license is not specific to a specific type so when you get your physical media, it will contain both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions.
And is my pleasure to assist. Good luck!

Phew, you have made my day. I am going to go and have a beer now and relax. I can still use my old system until the media arrives.

Are you and Autodesk employee or reseller Travis? I am going to watch these discussion groups as they are very informative.

Hi Sir, i have Autocad subscription question.

Last year 2011 we ask Autocad reseller for 2011 new Autocad license. but that time 2012 version is available.

they told us that we can still use 2011 if we include the subscription. because of that, we buy 2012 version with subscription.

now the subscription is about to expire. the reseller told us that we need to renew the subscription or else we cant use the current version we use,. (autoCad2011)

we have 2011 license key, 2012 key and they also send us the 2013 key upgrade key as part of the subscription.

can we maintain using 2011 version instead of 2012 or 2013?

we choose 2011 because we have this existing version we want only one version to use.

Hi icebergX,

Using a previous version is one of the benefits of having an Active Subscription. One can use the current version and up to 3 versions back of the Product. If you want to continue using the 2011 and the current version, then we suggest that you renew your Contract.

However, if you are only interested in using the 2011 version, provided that you have not activated nor used your 2012 and 2013 then you can continue to do so even without an Active Subscription.
