Slow open on networked drive

Hello,

I have a new machine and of course new problems. AutoCAD 2002 takes 30 to
45 seconds to open small drawings on my network drive. The same file on my
local drive opens in 4 to 5 seconds.

All other applications open file on the network drive as normal, AutoCAD
seems to be the only slow poke. Any ideas?

Peer to Peer Network
Windows 2000 Professional
AutoCAD 2002
P4 2ghz
512mb memory

Thanks in advance,

Craig

Have reinstalled 3 times now!

What speed network, 10 or 100BaseT, or are you using the phenomenally slower
Wireless or USB connections?

Are all you other applications opening 1MB+ files (or whatever size files
AutoCAD's are at) that much faster than AutoCAD?

In addition to the items Dean suggests, do you have a dns server anywhere on the network? Win2k prefers to resolve everything (that
I've seen so far) back to dns names. It's likely that you are still using netbios names to get unc paths, which win2k will resolve,
but it will take additional time. Autodesk appears to be writing autocad to use as much of the microsoft network API as possible so
that they are not responsible for any type of networking "abnormalities", but in doing so, they have exposed many people to the new
microsoft networking standards. For the most part people need to adjust their thinking about microsoft networking from the netb mode
to the tcp/ip mode. I'm not sure that this is your specific problem, but I have seen a number of people who have moved to the w2k
platform and have a lot of network troubles that seem to be dns related.

Try setting up a dns server or adding machines to the hosts files and see if it improves performance.
