Slow Win 2k Network

We have a Win 2k server (P700 256mb) on a network with about 12 machines
(mixed OS's win 98, NT4, 2k pro, xp), we have very slow response writing
files to the server, particularly in AutoCAD.

The based on communications tests, I don't think its hardware related.
Also, I have killed netbeui

Could this be an Active Directory Issue? As far as I can tell, the server
is running active directory, but using our router (Linksys) as a DHCP/DNS
server.

Any direction debugging would be appreciated.

Really hard problem to diagnose. I'd start by checking the performance on
the server (stuff like ethernet bandwidth, memory usage, paging, % disk
time, disk queue length, processor time). IMO 256MB is a little on the
"light" side for a w2k server, but if the server isn't paging it shouldn't
be a problem.

It could be almost anything including, but not limited to authentication,
dns, network bandwidth, server "capacity", ethernet drivers, user rights, or
server load.

I'd try to eliminate the server hardware first. Next step would probably be
updating all the network card drivers. Make sure dns is working correctly
(if you are running ad, it is very picky about dns configuration). After
that you just about have to resort to netmon's to see what is happening at
the "packet" level and figure out where the "delay" is occurring.

Looks like server perfomance is fine.

We did have a dns problem, however I think I resolved it, but we still have
the very slow network writes.

Drivers are pretty much up-to-date.

I'm stumped and open to other suggestions

Thanks

Rick:

If you have any virus scanning software running (server and/or workstation),
you may want to temporarily disable it and then test the speed. If AV is
the issue, you may want to play with the settings so it doesn't check so
rigorously.

Good luck,

Try this:
Have the domain admin log in and try to save a big file. If it goes faster,
look at permissions.
Also, try moving a large file from the local machine to the server using
Windows Explorer and time it. Then compare using AutoCAD to save the file
from the local machine to a file server.

We had a save problem when editing with Frontpage. It turned out the index
service on the server was accidentally re-indexing a log file that was being
updated constantly. Since the log file was huge and being updated many times
per minute the index service was bogging down the system. Once that file was
excluded from the index server then save times decreased by 99%.
