Sharing DWG's on a network

Hi,

We are running ADT2 and AutoCAD 2000/2000i here on WinNT 4. All the
drawings are saved on a network drive so everyone can have access to them.
If a file is being used by someone, then others can't open the same file for
editing, but only as a Read-only. The problem is we have no way of telling
who has the file open. Is it possible to find out who has the file open?

A related issue.... Some of our drafters are not using our "Standards" and
are messing up our drawings. Is there a way to check on a file to see who
and how many people have been editing the drawing?

Any help would be appreciated....Thanks!

This is kind of a cheap way to see who has a drawing and is right most of
the time. From WindowsNT, right click on the dwg file, properties, security
tab, ownership button. It should bring up a dialog box of the last person
to save any changes to the drawing. This is also usually who is in it right
now.

To check up on users, open drawing in Acad, File Pulldown, Drawing
Properties. This will add tabs to the properties box, (same as above) in
windows. The new properties, general tab will show the last person in the
drawing, how long they were in it, how much time has been spent in the
drawing since dwg properties was first used, and some other useful stuff.
You can add some programming to the start up lisps to make sure it gets run.
There is also a custom tab which you could add stuff to from the start up
lisps also. I track my users with it.

Hope this helps
Wade

PS. I have heard and seen reviews for third party programs for NT which
will let someone see how has a file open, but they are more administrator
type things that I would NEVER give my average users.
