NOW you tell us you have a swap file set to 1200 Mb with 32 mb memory
running an OS that may be eating half of that!

So 16Mb free into 1200Mb virtual means thrashing the disk almost 100 times
before replenishing the current 16Mb workspace in RAM (OK I over simplify
but it must be affecting accessability) you must be running scandisk and
    defraging each night!

Why so big? the worst it ought to be is about 128MB why not limit it to 64Mb
    and see if that helps.
$32 for ram must be cheaper than the time you will loose, and if the NIC
(which you dont mention) is not bus mastering it *&@~ should be.

What is "nic"??? Sorry for not telling about the swap file being so big... I
forgot.... I can find 32 megs of ram for 32 bucks for a new computer... but
this is not a new computer... Oh well thanks for the help.... I am getting a
new p3 built for a new server from the info I have.... but could someone
give me a good spec on what I should build for it? Thanks for all the help
    and input...

yes I am... I am very computer knowledgeable, just not great
with networks... I am just starting on my mcse training... I build computers all
the time, just this is my first real time building a small network and
making it work... I am learning as I go...

The SCSI II and 3COM recommendations coupled with
128MB Ram and a good backup drive are the key points. Dell is good if you pay
for the support you may need due to the proprietary builds they
    generate.

CPU (PII is enough) and Graphics (a lowish spec.
will do) are less important and the FEWer peripherals and less extras the
    better for your sanity.

Your server should not be your test bed for newish
driver problems. Look for guaranteed component compatability with
    NT4.

Are you building the server yourself???

What is "nic"??? Sorry for not telling about the
swap file being so big... I
forgot.... I can find 32 megs of ram for
32 bucks for a new computer... but
this is not a new computer... Oh
well thanks for the help.... I am getting a
new p3 built for a new
server from the info I have.... but could someone
    give me a good
spec on what I should build for it? Thanks for all the help
    and
    input...
