I have a question about file/print servers... What are the min. requirements
for a file/print server... I have the following computer as my file and
    print server:

    p166
    win 98se
    32 megs of ram
    13 gig HD / 5 gig free
    4 meg video
4 gig / 8 gig tape back up

It is storing cad files for 6 people.... with a average of 20 megs a day
being added... I will need to a a new hd soon.... Any help would be nice...
I will understand If this post gets moved... but please tell me where it got
    moved to....

    Thanks Alot

We had a file/print server (Pentium 133/128Mb) up to just recently, and was working fine, I must tell that it was (and still is) Windows NT 4.0
    (We have 50 users)

I would increase the memory to 64Mb though, depending of the type of prints and file size, if you go to more that 64Mb consider upgrading to NT.

For 6 people your computer can be good enough for a while, if it's just for file/print sharing

    Hope this helps.

I don't know what's the ability of Win98 to act as a server, I would suggest to
upgrade to NT, our server never crashes, Just made a check, it's been running
    for 344 hours now.

    Did you run ScanDisk?
Or you might have a memory problem with "only" 32Mb

    Hope this helps.

Yep, but 64Mb of memory IS cheap...

32 is really not a lot for a server!

    Good Luck.

I don't believe that your file/print server is under powered. I'm with
Yves on this. Win98 is not designed nor is it efficient at performing
these types of activities. I would definitely add another 32 MBs of RAM
and change the Operating System to Win NT.

If you don't need a full blown server that acts as a domain controller and
you don't plan on moving away from your peer-to-peer type network, then NT
workstation would be appropriate for $300 less than server. Doing this
would give you the stability and security (if you want to implement that)
of NT. You should be able to pick up a copy of workstation for $300.

A 166 machine is fine for a server, I have two running here now. However, an
increase in the memory seems to be needed if it's crashing regularly and also an
upgrade to NT seems a MUST for a server for the added security and management
functionality. Invest your money on those two things and you will see a vast
    improvement in performance.

Thanks for all of the info... I doubt it will happen, but thanks for the
help... The reason I say the computer is under powered is I and my coworkers
have file sizes starting in the 5 meg size up to 20 megs.... I think I have
narrowed down the crashes to 2 things... 1) my tape backup or 2) The actual
physical network it self... The ram has somewhat to do with it.... Being
that it has a 1.2 gig swap file....

Thanks Again for all the help and input from all
