Read-Only Drawings Once Again

We have seen several posts on this site for problems trying to save AutoCAD files to a Novell 5.1 server with the 4.8 client. Users will randomly receive the error message of "This file cannot be saved as it is being accessed by another user". There is a thread on the Novell newsgroup with over 30 responses related to this problem. Apparently this is a Novell bug that only affects CAD files (and not just AutoCAD). We have tried many fixes such as setting client variables (file caching, file commit), setting ISAVEPERCENT to 0, setting ISAVEBAK to 1, loading the 3D update, changing server caching variables, disabling antivirus, and even loading a Beta SP3 version of client 4.8 to no avail.

To give you the specifics on my case: 30+ Win NT SP6 clients, Novell clients 4.7-4.8SP3, AutoCAD 2000 SP2. No one (even Novell) seems to be offering a solution to this problem. If anyone has encountered and conquered this problem, please respond.

Getting desperate,

I do not know if this makes anyone feel better,
but, the problem isn't just with Novell.  We use IBM based servers and a
DFS based system.  There do not seem to be any problems with saving stuff
under Win 95 systems accessing the directories using PC Enterprise, but,
NT 4.0 or NT 2000 machines using fast connect seem to have this problem
quite often (I have had it happen twice today already).

It could be a combination of things including a
large user base (we could have 200-300 users at any given time logged in).
I do not know the answers.  I would guess that it is based on the operating
system and that a slightly slower response makes the operating system report to
AutoCAD that the file is read only.  I would be interested if there were a
registry edit that could be made to correct this.

I would love to be able to not hear any more
complaints or have them myself on this matter.

Thanks,

Shane

I'm not sure about Win2K but there is an article on the MS Support Site that
explains Opportunistic Locking on Windows NT. You can read it at:
