R2008 Install Fails

I've created a deployment image for our standalone licenses of Land Desktop
2008, using ONLY the Autodesk defaults. There were no problems creating the
deployment image.

Installation on workstations fails with the following error in the logs:

MSI (s) (20:38) [11:44:50:695]: Product: AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop
Companion 2008 -- Error 1324. The folder path 'Land Projects 2008' contains
an invalid character.

What is invalid??? I'm using the installation defaults, without changing
anything!! This happens at all computers I've tried.

Installation directly from the DVD works, but only about 10% of our
workstations have DVD's. And I expect the deployment functions to work
anyway - isn't that what we pay Autodesk the big bucks for anyway??

Thanks for any suggestions on resolving this issue.

Well, I updated my deployment image with the files from the DVD and it still fails with the same error.

The problem is that error 1603 is a generic Windows Installer error. It
isn't specific to one problem. Read earlier in this thread where Chris Dodge
is showing me how to look through the log file. See if you can locate your
specific error.

I got the same 1603 error installing 2006 when I had a later version of
.NET Framework installed. So keep searching.

I searched the log for the key words he mentioned earlier in the thread and didn't find any of them.

It just seems odd. Because like you, Civil 3D installed fine for me but LDT will not.

I have submitted a support request to Autodesk and will post back here if they resolve this issue for me.

There are two common problems I've seen so far:

1) McAfee has a "feature" called "Access protection", that has 2 options
that can interfere with administrators creating Autodesk deployments.
These two (or more for earlier versions) options must be disabled on the
SERVER:

- Prevent remote creating of AUTORUN files
- Prevent remote creation/modification of executable and configuration
files (*.dll, *.ocx, etc)

2) For LDT deployment, Make sure to change the default "D:\Land Projects
2008" to "C:\Land Projects 2008". You will only see that prompt if you
hit the "CONFIGURE" button on one of the screens. It will only default to
the C: drive IF the C: drive is the largest hard drive on the system you
create the deployment from. Your client install will then fail if the
workstation does not have a 😧 hard drive.

It turns out that this was not a problem with my deployment image because it worked fine on two other workstations that I tested the deployment image on. It was just a problem on one particular workstation. But Autodesk could not figure out exactly what the problem was. The only workaround was to do a complete uninstall of all Autodesk products as outlined in the following KB article.

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2887771&linkID=9240617

One other problem I have found though is if I uninstall the LD 2008 product from any workstation then my LD 2006 stops working with a fatal error at start up. Autodesk did not have an answer for that problem either other then the full uninstall and then reinstall the older Autodesk application. This problem was repeatable on 3 different workstation so I know it wasn't a fluke.

I spent many hours dinking around with this with no real useful solution, and I hope this will help someone else avoid the same wasted time involvement.

That is in no way LD -specific, many AutoCAD -based products have the
same problem: they have some shared files, which the uninstaller removes
because it doesn't know that some other program would also use them.
- I seem to remember having once uninstalled AutoCAD 2002 without
breaking 2006, but for example uninstalling TrueView 2 will break 2006,
not to speak about vanilla and Mechanical versions of the same year.

I understand that it is not LD specific. But quite frankly that just shows that they don't properly test their software to be able to say they can be installed side by side. To be installed side by side uninstalling one should not break the other.

Even a repair or reinstall won't work after uninstalling LD 2008. You have to do a full uninstall of all Autodesk products including deleting all the registry keys and then reinstall LD 2006.

Granted in most cases you wouldn't uninstall the newer version. But in my case I was doing test installs and don't want the new version on the workstations.
