QSAVE not working on WINDOWS 2000 Server system

We have recently installed a new server running Windows 2000 server. We run ACAD 2000 on a network license system and ACAD Lt2000 locally on networked machines. When usinf QSAVE the drawing does not save except to an AC$ file since the system thinks another user has accessed the file when this is not the case.
The terminals rtuns Windows 98 or Windows ME.

Some drawings will work fine but about 75% will not save.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks

This issue has been addressed many times on this ng. Unfortunately there is no end all fix all for it.

The basic's of the problem are as follows: When you do a save in autocad a lot more happens than a new version of the file being
written. The basic's of autocad's save process are as follows (assuming that there are no xref's).

Autocad sends a request to "unlock" the current drawing.
Autocad checks to see if there is a .bak file.
If there is a .bak file delete it.
Rename the existing .dwg file to the .bak file.
Place a new copy of the .dwg file in the location of the old one.
Replace the lock on the .dwg file.

If any of the above actions "fail" or do not occur within the desired "time limits" autocad interprets that as the drawing being
read-only.
Some of the most common reasons for the false read-only are:
High network utilization (excessive network traffic causes some requests to be dropped)
High server utilization (excessive work queue on the server can cause it to not respond in a "timely" manner)
Mis-Operative network cards (Especially true on W98. Many of the network card drivers that shipped initially for w98 had problems,
please get the latest network card drivers from the network card manufacturer).
Server vs Workstation speed (If a person is using a very quick workstation and a very slow server, that alone could cause the
errors. The workstation would be expecting a reply from the server, as the server doddles along at a whopping 133MHz trying to
access the file on one of it's 4 5400 rpm ide drives, and simply "times out".)

Does your network fit into any (or all???) of the above scenarios? If so try to "minimize" the effects of the worst one and see
if the ratio changes from 75% to 65%. At least you'll know your on the right track.
