Please test resetting the HSDS.dlm configuration file.
1. Close 3ds Max Design 2012.
2. Browse to the following local user application preferences directory-
Windows VISTA / Windows 7
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign\2010 - 32bit\enu\plugcfg
3. Rename the HSDS.dlm configuration file in this direcrtory to HSDSdlm_old
4. Restart 3ds Max Design 2012, new user application preference file will be created on startup.
I hope that the above information is useful.
If renaming the HSDS.dlm to hsdsdlm_old does not help. You can also copy the hsds.dlm from another working machine and see if that works.

Hi,
I am having the same problem with 3ds Max 2012 64-bit. When starting it up, it hangs on HSDS.dlm... I went into local app data folder and into the plugcfg folder but theres no HSDS.dlm file there.
Thank u so much!
I was having the same problem and I renamed the HSDS file and it worked!
Thank you. Days of trying to find solutions finally came to an end.
People... if you are having the same problem... try this! 🙂
I had the same problem as gentlestev and it was solved when I chose Change Graphics Mode>English>Open GL
Do give it a shot and lemme know if it works out!
In case any one cannot find the HSDS.dlm file in appdata directory stated above, I found mine in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2012\stdplugs and changed it to HSDS.dlm.off. Max then loaded up fine. I hope I won't need it later.
hi go to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2014\stdplugs (your software folder location) . search for hsds.dlm and rename it to HSDSdlm_old ( the .dlm must be remove)
start your software.
