100Bt network. Our switches are interconnected through a gigahertz back
plane. Autocadd is loaded on a server. Is there any performance
degradation when operating Autocadd 2000i or Mechanica locally vs over
the network (response time). In the network version does Autocadd pull
the software onto the local computer and run it locally or does it keep
going back to the server to execute commands?

Jim,
Are you running CAD from the server or have your client machines
installed the network deployed version? If it is running on the server,
it will depend on the server to execute commands. Just as in a terminal/server
network. The client deployed installs run solely on the local machine and
access the server/ADLM when obtaining licenses.
So when it comes to network performance hits, having the application
run across your LAN can cause issues with users being able to access shared
resources depending on how much traffic using it creates.

We are running CAD from the server. My understanding is that the executables
are downloaded from the server onto the local machine. So initial response
time may be slower , however after the executables are downloaded they
remain active on the local machine. If this is true, once the files are
downloaded the response time should be equivalent to running the software
locally?????

purposes. The initial startup is a little slow. If you are using just
plain AutoCAD then once AutoCAD is started up the user should not even be
able to notice much of a difference (it will be a little slower). However,
I noticed that the Mechanical portion of AutoCAD was extremely slow over the
network (on every access). Once I had a full install performed from a
network deployment location AutoCAD's performance increased dramatically.
Now we have full installs of AutoCAD on each station, our custom files as
well as most of AutoCAD's customizable files located on a central network
share. Now we have the performance of a local install and the ease of
administration of the network heavy install. Besides even with a network
heavy install (run from the server), you still have to install most of the
patches on each client as well as the server. So in reality you are just
creating more work for yourself with a network heavy deployment.
