Parallel installation of network and local version

I want to install a network licensed AND a local licensed version of Acad
Map 2Ki on ONE workstation (NT4 SP5). Is this possible?

This is not possible in AutoCAD 2000i. You need to deploy one or the other.
In AutoCAD 2002 you will have the ability to switch between the two
providing you have purchased both a network and a standalone license.

Thanks for your answer.
But .. isn't there a trick maybe by manipulation the registry or writing a
batch file for exchanging some files of Acad?

Hi Frank,

This is not possible except if your running say AutoCAD 2000i and AutoCAD
MAP 2000i. or other vertical products. Then you can do this. As far as
having say standalone AutoCAD 2000i and Client or Network 2000i, this can
not be done.

Take care.

Excuse me if this sounds crass, but if you know for a fact that it cannot be
done and why it cannot be done then you should give some sort of explanition
as to why. Otherwise simply stating that it is impossible does nothing but
discourage someone frome trying. Perhaps achiving side by side
installations would be hard enough to keep most folks from attempting it but
my bet is that some extensive registry manipulation is all that really needs
to be done.

Hello Dick,

Side by side is not supported! It's not just a matter of tweeking the
registry to get it to work. There are lots of things to consider like third
party compatibility, other Autodesk applications that use the Common Shared
Directory, and a few other things. Please don't encourage any one to try
and do this, or you could end up with one heck of a mess on your hands.

Take care

Again, I stress that "not supported" and "not possible" are two distinctly
different conditions. Just because it is difficult doesn't necessarily mean
it's not worth doing.

Alright Bud, suppose this guy is in France. According to Frank Hervet ("Re:
I need to 'convert' 150 local licenses of AutoCAD to the network license
system." 4/25/01 in this news group) all that would be needed is to swap a
dll. In that scenario you could easily create two icons on the desktop that
could point to a bat file that swapped the dll, or pointed to different
profiles that did the same thing. I do not use the French version but if
this is true my bet is that it is not "supported" by AutoDesk which is
distinctly different than not possible.

If I were determined to do this my approach might be to configure two
workstations identically using an image program such as Ghost. Then install
the stand alone version on one and a network on the other. There are
several ways to check the difference between the two.
1. Copy the program registry from one to the next and see what happens. If
swapping the registry "converts" between network and standalone then you are
set, just find the keys that are different. A simple bat file or VBA
program could easily change the key quickly.
2. If swapping the registry didn't work then it is probably a file thing.
Compare the essential directories (support, root, etc...) for differences in
files, like maybe size or modified date. If you find differences try
swapping those files and see what happens. In the French version I bet that
the ADESKSYS.DLL file is just slightly different between the two versions.

That could be my approach but I have only thought about it for a few
minutes, there is probably a lot better way to go about it.

My bet is that if you had a good head on your shoulders, enough drive, and a
day or two to goof off with the problem then you could come up with a hack.
Now weather this violates some license agreement or something is beyond me
but it absolutely positively must be possible even if AutoDesk does not
support it. All you have to do is find the 1's and 0's that are different
and swap em'.

Telling someone that something is not "possible" achieves nothing. I agree
that someone could really mess things up badly if they weren't careful so
they should be warned but not necessarily discouraged.

Hi Dick!

Thanks for your interest in this problem, i have already tested registry and
file swapping and it didn't work (I use the german versions).
I think, the c-dilla license manager is a problem.

It is not so important for me that it's worth to test it some further days,
but it would be a nice feature (hope the license problem will be much easier
in Acad 2002).

I have a network and a local license, but if it's violating the license
agreement I will not install both versions on a single computer (would this
be a problem, Bud?).
