Network vs. Standalone

Does the network version mean that the server manages who can access the
software?

In other words, you can have Acad installed on 50 computers and only 10
licenses. The server only allows 10 users to access AutoCAD?

Also, how much headache does this cause. Is it worth it for a 10 user firm?

Another question: The network software still lets you open up multiple
AutOCAD sessions or .DWG files, right?

To answer both of your questions. Yes

Yes, you can open multiple dwgs without using multiple licenses. Yes, you
can install it on 50 computers and the server will control the 10 users.
That is the setup we have here. The advantage is mainly if you have casual
CAD users. We have managers and none CAD people here who have AutoCAD
installed and only use it occasionally. I wouldn't have loaded CAD for most
of these people if I needed stand alone licenses for each one. I can do it
because I have all of my licenses on the server and I have enough seats for
my full time CAD designers and a couple extra for the casual users.

To decide if it makes sense for your firm you need to ask yourself a couple
of questions. How much do my 10 people use CAD? How quickly do I expect to
grow? Would I benefit from more CAD installations than I have licenses?
Once you look at the answers to those question, you'll get a good idea if
you want to network your seats.

Not who can access, but how many.

Yes.

Yes. If you have 10 users and only 6 full time users and 4 part time users
then you might only need 7 or 8 licenses and have everything floating
between the 10 users. This can be a huge cost savings. Not only in
licenses but your recurring cost of subscriptions if you are on the
subscription program.

No headaches here. The lic server is the same as our file server and the
same server that our customized menus/dwgs/blocks/lisp routines/etc are
stored on. Not having access to that server is the same as not having
access to Autocad even if we had standalone installs.

The only headache we've ran into is if every license is used and another
person wants to get on. 99,000 times out of 100,000 at least 1 person isn't
using acad. So they just ask that person to get off and they can then use
autocad.

We've gotten around that by using this LogOff program:
http://www.xanadu.cz/default.asp?page=/logoff.htm

When we upgrade to Acad 2004 we will stop using that program and start using
the TIMEOUT functionality of FlexLM that works with 2004 and IV7. 😉
